Have I been hit by Penguin or Panda? Does it really matter?

I have quite a few sites. A few that were ranking good and then penalized. I'm trying to determine if they were hit by panda or penguin.


Site A - Penalized Mid Feb - Not in top 300
Site B - Penalized Mid Feb - Not in top 300
Site C - Penalized Mid April - Not in top 300
Site D - Penalized Mid April - Not in top 300

My guess is that C&D are Penguin and A&B are Panda. Does this sound about right?

From what I've been reading, Penguin is a lot easier to recover from than Panda? Any help on this is appreciated.

Pidgen came out on April 25th 2012 so it is probably safe to say anything before that was from panda

What matters is that you continue to build high authority backlinks. Rankings will come back; I'd focus on some good services in the BST section.

I think you have it reversed.

Panda is way easier to recover from than Penguin. With Panda, you can improve your website and get out of the penalty. With Penguin, you have to improve off-site backlinks and that's way harder to control/change.

Sites A & B were likely unnatural link warnings, that's when Google cracked down on networks and many sites were crushed by them.

Sites C & D are probably Penguin, which is recoverable. It takes hard work and a lot of time. Often times, SEO's & webmasters aren't really willing to make the changes. But again, it is recoverable but a time consuming process.
