I've been testing AdBrite and Chitika on a couple of sites and so far having moderate success. AdSense is still the gold standard but many don't use it for one reason or another.

Google is best. There is no one best as google.

I am afraid if you are looking for text based ads, there is not good/better paying competitor to Google adsense. However, if you are looking for CPM/interaction based advertisements, there can be a lot of options.
