In my experience, If the content is good and the keyword is easy, it can be done.

Yep content is important. But you need a good SEO for others to see content.

I run a small blog on which I write articles myself. They usually don't rank very well, but one article got a lot of traffic (relatively to my usual traffic) and ranked #1 on google for some keywords, and it got some backlinks naturally. I only did very basic onsite SEO for that article.
So yes that method does kind of work, but keep in mind that this was a VERY low traffic keyword with basically 0 competition.

You need links nowadays in my own experience for any keyword where someone else is actually targetting it.
I saw a nice approach a member was sharing the other day where they were using SEMrush (I think) to see what keywords with volume various niche forums were ranking for as they tend to be easy enough to outrank with good on page SEO and long-form content. Might be worth considering.

Making no links vs making/buying links:
Here is the google analytics report for one of my 'pet' sites for 2014-2018 period (5 years total) - it is outdoors site (fishing, boating, camping) and it is more of fun/learn/express myself than money site, but it is monetized with google adsense and amazon. It has FB page with less than 1000 followers.
Site started in 2014 - I don't intend to sell it, I don't intend to make it 'THE money site', I don't ... - it is just fun, leisure, something that I like to write about ...
As one can see, there are few spikes back in the days when I was posting really often on FB (back in the 2014 and 2015). Then FB decreased outreach to the people that liked my FB page, and since then I don't post often on FB (and such traffic converted really badly).
At the end of the 2017, I sold one of my money sites (THE money site) via FE International (highly recommended), so starting with the January 2018, I started to add backlinks (PBNs, guest posts, Q&A, etc.) and you can see what kind of impact it had on the site - if I added more links, I am sure that it would reached easily 1000 visitors per day.
Note: than drop in the traffic in the GA (end of may, 2018) was due to the testing of plugins before GDPR-a went alive and it took me 10 or so days to figure few things out.
Site was almost 4 years old, almost no backlinks, and it didn't have much traffic - but when I started to build backlinks, well, graph shows what happened.
So, ladies and gentlemen, my dear esteemed BHW colleagues - I rest my case regarding SEO/SERP/backlinks and other similar topics
SEO/SERP is not dead, it is just bloody expensive

Looks good, content + domain age definitely plays a big part.

Your method will work ONLY
when u have a ton of contents, note, its ton, not some like hundreds, at least thousands...
and just think how much thousands articles will cost u...
maybe u could "spam" , that's a whole new story.
throw some hundreds articles without links indeed can get some traffics, but not that much, pity earnings.
when u want to invest some serious money into links, things start to get interesting...

Fantastic case study. Do you still add content to it regularly or do you focus more on link building?

As I said, this is my 'pet' site - I write about things that I like (my hobbies, for example), but I rarely add links - at the moment site has ~300 pages, some 200+ RD (it got 5-6 links from wikipedia naturally), but money potential is simply not there to justify building (buying) more links except for testing... One day, who knows ...
Anyway, I have few more sites that deserve more attention (and investment), so focus is on them at the moment.
