Has anyone used Payload CMS, strapi, or directus?

Any experience with these CMS platforms? It's clear to me that wordpress is on its way out (in my opinion, please don't flame me), so I don't want to waste time building up knowledge of wordpress - especially since the pros can outlap me twice over.

Which one would you say is best, and takes the least effort to maintain, set up and automate?

Have you tried any of these since you made this post?

I currently use Strapi and enjoy it for managing content in my database. I created a static site using 11ty (Eleventy) that queried my strapi site for content and that worked out nicely. Payload has caught my attention recently and I really like they offer, authentication, white label, multi-tenants, and even e-commerce to build a store, plus much more. What's even better is Payload can live inside your NextJS app. I'm really like what I'm seeing so far with Payload. Strapi does have a nicer UI, maybe that's because I'm used to using it.

I don't see any of these replacing WordPress any time soon because of how easy WP makes building websites for non technical folks. You still need a frontend with any headless CMS and it's hard to beat WP in that area. WP is great for marketers because they need little to no code knowledge, just install a theme (or page builder) and plug away. You can't get that experience with payload or strapi yet. I can see Payload CMS getting there if they keep doing right.

1. How many sites do you manage/ how big are they → you can DM me if you don't want to share publicly
2. What do you think about sanity.io

I don't have any sites yet using payload. I have a local Strapi app that I started migrating over to Payload.

I don't have any experience using Sanity.io and it never appealed to me because I don't like having to pay for their service when I would rather deploy my own.

Strapi is a good choice to start with!
 
If you are looking for something low-maintenance, i would skip the wordpress stress. Ghost, squarespace or webflow are way easier to set up and manage and you can automate a lot without messing with plugins or constant updates
 
Tried all three. Payload feels the smoothest for custom workflows, Strapi is the most mature, and Directus is great for dashboards. For low maintenance Payload wins for me.
 
Wix has improved significantly the past few years too especially for small sites or quick launches.

If you want easier, low-maintenance alternatives to WordPress:

Webflow – Easiest for general sites, visual builder, stable, low maintenance, easy automations.
Ghost – Best for blogs/content sites, super fast, built-in email/memberships, API-friendly.
Shopify – Best for ecommerce, very stable, minimal upkeep, big app ecosystem.
Framer – Great for fast landing pages, simple but less flexible.
Static generators (Hugo/Astro/Jekyll) – Zero maintenance, super fast, but more technical to set up.

Simplest choices:
• Webflow (general sites)
• Ghost (content sites)
• Shopify (stores)
