I am looking to having someone recompile my PHP and include a number of extensions and have gone to freelancer where I am getting some feedback regarding my project.

Was wondering if anyone has used this site before?

Or does anyone have any views on using this kind of service?

Slim

They actually scammed me for $100 + I couldn't pay my valuable developer (second thing is bigger loss).

I know it's big marketplace, but I will never, ever login to that site.

Good luck that PayPal refunded me.

Thanks for the reply.

Good to get some feedback on the site, I seem to have found a 'trusted' developer wishing to help me on my project and he is highly reviewed on there and wishes to have a meeting beforehand on Skype to discuss the details. I will see what he says before going ahead with it.

Thanks again

I used to make a few extra bucks over there back in the day. But i stopped using it thanks to out asian brothers because let's face it-we can't compete with their cheap prices. Lately everyone has been complaining a lot of the people offering services there.

I have had some success using freelancer with CL Ads, but other than that I have not used them much.

As other are suggesting, Elance and Odesk are good alternatives... However, even there you have to watch out for the review and who you are going with.

Sometimes the race to the bottom for prices is not always the best option.

I had an account with freelancer since around 2009, but i just started using it couple of months ago (as a freelancer)

I've completed many projects ranging from $100 to $1000 and never had any kind of problem with the site or the employers.

Around 2 months ago i took a project for creating an upload/download manager for a filesharing company, for the price of $2000.

After the project was completed, the employer delivered the funds, we've left each other positive feedback and everyone was happy.

I requested a withdrawal, which randomly was removed from the transactions page during the "pay-day", and their answer for this was that "we can't release the funds as there is a possible chargeback risk" (the employer paid them through wire transfer, so there was ZERO chargeback risk basically). They also suspended the employer's account without any reason at all.

All this happened after they got in the possession of the funds.

To keep the story short, after many opened tickets and chat sessions with their support, they released the funds after 1 month and only after i threat them to take legal action and that i will create some ripoff reports that will destroy their reputation (not like they have great reputation anyways).

So stay away from this site/company unless you're willing to spend alot time recovering your money.

Odesk is more serious. Freelance is a brothel, do they actually work as an escrow between the employer and the freelancer like odesk or not?

No they don't work as an escrow service.

They have a dispute system, but can only be used if a milestone exist for the specific project.

Both oDesk and Elance are much better than Freelancer. You need to be more careful when selecting a freelancer. Just read reviews before you hire anyone. In fact, you need to read the reviews whoever you hire.

Hi VHSEO_Mike,

We appreciate the feedback.

We?d like to inform you that with Freelancer.com?s acquisition of Scriptlance, the fifth largest freelance marketplace in the world, you will now be able to draw from an even bigger pool of world-class talent, with over 4 million skilled freelancers ready to complete any job requirement at the site.

And we agree with you on checking the user?s reviews . With Freelancer.com, users can view the Reputation system. It provides a detailed summary of the User?s history and what the user has accomplished, be it employer or freelancer. The higher their Reputation is (5 stars being the best), the more reliable and reputable the user is. In addition, we strongly recommend viewing the user profile, and see how well they communicate and how much thought they put into their profile and more.

I hope I?ve addressed your concerns and we hope to see you use Freelancer.com services. Thank you very much.

I want to make clear one thing regarding the freelancer.com Milestone Payments.

You aren't protected from chargebacks in any way.

Even tho they suggest using their milestone system and make it appear that you're safe doing so, even if after 2 months the employer files a chargeback, the funds for the specific project will be removed from your account instantly, along with any feedback left by both parties, including the project itself, and the employer's account will only be banned.

And if you don't have any funds available in your account, you balance will be on minus.

Freelancer is just like eBay or any other market place, you have to be careful.

I had good and bad shares.

Good:
Made 2 apps via freelancer. One for twitter on for FB. Made a combined 5,000 selling them with ebooks.

Bad:
One time it took a developer 2 months to finish / fix a application
One custom project made ( a windows app ) took 1 hour to install (and it was a very simple program)

Like with every marketplace you can have good and bad experience.

I usually use some freelance services on oDesk, i have a programmers guy out there, a KW researcher guy and a designer woman :).
My team is from Bengladesh. You have to test every persons you hire because you will find lot of unskilled folks.

I started as a freelancer in Odesk back in 2009,I started as SEO before going to more indept internet money making ventures,

Then in 2011 I started seeking other opportunity out of Odesk and been employed to several companies through headhunter like Virtual Assistant and craiglists In which I am fortunate to say that I haven't scammed nor scammed anyone. and always delivered Good services

As of today I already have my own company and hiring in Odesk and from recommendation from friends.

To the point, Odesk is a great market place just be wary with recommendations, work history is the best way to see if they qualify. There are also other market place like craiglists and head hunters companies (seek for recommendations and feedback from previous employers) or better yet recommendation from friends would be very great way to make sure.
