Has anyone succeeded dropshipping from Alibaba?

From my experience, both Aliexpress and Alibaba suppliers have really bad communication skills. But you can still find a good one. I would suggest finding an agent who could find you the best products and prices and delivery times. Some of them even have their own apps, they can integrate them into your store and do fulfilments automatically. To find them just search for FB dropship groups.
