Happy anniversary!! To me!

41 years, 1 month, and 3 days ago, I walked into a high school classroom and saw a new student had transferred into school. I was the school geek, but she didn't know that. When she turned and looked at me, I fell instantly, completely, helplessly, and heedlessly in love. She had red hair, freckles, dimples, a pug nose, a big smile, and an Irish accent. How could I not? In my defense, I was 17, and she smiled at me.

40 years ago as of 6 pm tonight, I conned her into marrying me. Everyone was against this except for a very few relatives, and many family members didn't even bother to come to the wedding, as they knew it wouldn't last.

Tonight, when we re-do our vows, there will be three people at the ceremony who were at the wedding, me, my wife, and her mother, who a long time ago used to hate me.

I have never cheated on this woman, to do so would betray her trust. I have never hit her, to do so would betray my beliefs. I have never wished she wee not in my life, without her I am incomplete. With her, I have had a happy life, and have never felt lonely.

Love exists, true love really does. Love at first sight is possible, I am living proof. You can get things you do not even deserve, she married me with the faith that only a foolish schoolgirl could have. There is someone for every one, it doesn't matter how weird you are. You just have to find the right weirdo to fall in love with.

You can be happy if you treat each other with dignity and respect.

I suspect that even nations could get along if they could somehow simply just do those two things to each other.

Anyway, I felt like bragging.

Holy crap. 40 years of solid marriage? I feel like I should be bowing down to you right now. Staying married for 40 years straight is like Mission Impossible to me.
