VERACRUZ, Mexico -- An Internet video is threatening Mexico's Zetas drug cartel with exposure of its allies in the local police and news media this week unless the gang frees a kidnapped member of the international hacker movement known as "Anonymous."
The YouTube message, which claims to be from Anonymous "Veracruz, Mexico and the world," says it is "tired of the criminal group the Zetas, which is dedicated to kidnapping, stealing and extortion," and threatens to fight back with information instead of weapons.
It said it knows of police officers, journalists, taxi drivers and others working with the Zetas.
The video refers to an unidentified person kidnapped in the coastal city of Veracruz, and says: "You have made a great mistake by taking one of us. Free him."
The hacker group, which has claimed responsibility for attacks on corporate and government websites worldwide, supposedly will act Friday if the kidnapped activist is not freed or is harmed, according to the message.
"We cannot defend ourselves with weapons, but we can with their cars, houses, bars," the message adds, apparently alluding to properties owned by cartel supporters. "It's not difficult. We know who they are and where they are are."
"Information is free," it says. "We do not forgive. We do not forget."
An official with the Veracruz state attorney general's office, who could not be named because he was not authorized to speak on the record, said the office could not confirm video's authenticity or the case of the kidnapping.
Veracruz, an oil state on the Gulf of Mexico with a major port of the same name, has seen a spike in drug violence in recent months in what authorities say is a battle between the Zetas drug cartel, which has controlled the territory for at least a year, and its rivals. Dozens of bodies have been showing up in recent weeks, including the dumping of 35 last month on a main highway in rush-hour traffic in the city of Boca del Rio.

Two other Internet postings since July have announced the arrival of group that calls itself the "Mata Zetas," or Zeta Killers, who authorities say are likely aligned with the powerful Sinaloa Cartel. Others have raised questions about whether the group's members are vigilantes or other rogue bands taking justice into their own hands against the Zetas.
The new message, presented by someone wearing a theater mask that is a trademark of Anonymous, was reportedly uploaded to websites early this month, but was first reported Friday on the website of the global intelligence think tank Stratfor.
Stratfor, in its analysis of the video, said anyone exposed by Anonymous as a Zetas collaborator ? accurately or not ? would be targeted by rival gangs, and the Zetas could respond by attacking Internet activists even if they are not affiliated with Anonymous.
Three people have been killed recently in the northern states of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas by suspected Zetas who apparently believed the victims used the Internet to spread information about the gang.

    This is pretty wicked.

If the cartel did kidnap a member of anonymous then they don't know how big of a can of worms their going to open if they don't let the person go.

Both sides will have to play their next moves very carefully.

I hope the anonymous ain't bluffing and will release the information, then mexican army will go and shoot the cartell members without asking too much questions.

Too many people have died already and will die by their hand.

The people can only be pushed so far until something gives. My friend from Mexico says it's way worse there than the US media has portrayed it to be.

Come on now man. If the FBI and all these government officials in the United States can't find or figure out who these guys are, how do you think the Mexican Cartel is going to find them?

So your telling me that a bunch of unemployed kids, who still live at their parents house locked away all day behind a computer, are going to release private information about the cartels and its going to scare the cartels. You do realize people get killed in plain broad day light in the middle of the city, am talking where atleast 20-30 bystander witness the executions.I dont think you realize how much has the cartesl have infiltrated the political parties and police force, am talking like literally minimum 50% of all the politicians and police officers are working as informants and/or executioners(yea police people commit murders for the cartels). If you don't believe me , look at some actual hard statistics, lol i can bet you they will probably cut the kids head and put that anonymous mask then film it put it on the web and scared all those kids off. Information about their wherebouts isnt something that scares those guys, they are not fucking around and killing, chopping heads, dismembering bodies is something they do on a daily basis and that doesnt even phase those guys and you can be sure they won't release anyone they kidnapped alive or in one piece, not even if these kids threaten them. There is a reason why atleast 95% of all army officers wear a skimask all year long, and its not because of the climate.

I completely agree. I don't think that this threat is going to scare the cartel at all. If anything, I think it might backfire on them and get the person in captivity killed for sure. I'm not educated on how bad it is in Mexico right now, but I assume if they have gone this long, they have some bad corruption and leaking information as they state they have will not really do much, because who is going to go and arrest these people or do something about it, when the authorities are in on it too.

Never underestimate kids behind computers. Some politicians fucked me back when I was 20, and for 2 consecutive years I attacked them back.

I fucked many of their policy decisions, stopped them from planting their rats in high places, etc.

I just had a laptop and an internet connection, and yes, I was living with my parents at the time.

Damaging information is a crucial arsenal to anyone who want to launch political cyber attacks.

You can call them idiots, but maybe some are actually willing to die for something larger than themselves. I know a lot of them are not serious and just jumped on the band wagon, but some people are fed up and no longer let fear control them. The only reason it is has gotten as bad as it has is because good people (the majority of mexico) have been suppressed by fear. It will only get worse unless something radically changes.

It could go both ways. He could be talking about the bloggers or he could be saying that they are crazy because they have killed bloggers and that they will go after them. He wasn't very clear, but I think his message can be interpreted either way, not sure what makes you say he for sure is talking about the bloggers and I interpreted it that he meant they are crazy because they will now go after them.
