I just logged on to a couple of my sites and found this

most probably he just uploaded index.html file to your root, check it in ftp and delete it if you find it

It's a good start to check your FTP access logs for suspicious IPs. If you have luck, he only replaced index file.

The bad news are you never know did he already rooted your box but in your case i doubt that. Simply because, why root it and replace index file to alert admin. Real professional never does it that way, of course they don't want make too much noise if the site is interesting.

Anyway the process is not that simple, if you want to be absolutely sure he did not left anything extra on your site, it will mean reinstall and restoring from backups.
