The 'Breaking Bad' Season 5 Premiere Breaks Show Records For BitTorrent Piracy

The second half of the final season of "Breaking Bad," AMC?s critically acclaimed drama about a high-school chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin, premiered Sunday night in the U.S.

The episode aired in the U.K., Australia and several other countries just hours after the U.S. debut, but "Breaking Bad" was still pirated by hundreds of thousands of people on BitTorrent.

Within hours of the first illegal copy of the "Breaking Bad" premiere popping up on the Internet, 80,000 people were sharing the most popular torrent file, according to TorrentFreak.

After the first 12 hours, 500,000 people had downloaded "Breaking Bad" illegally.

At this rate, the "Breaking Bad" premiere will not only set a new record for the show's TV ratings, it will also break its own piracy record.

Most the early downloads came from Australia, where "Breaking Bad" airs on Foxtel, a premium TV network. Following were the U.S. and Canada, which claimed 16% and 9% of the total downloads, respectively.

British fans were able to stream "Breaking Bad" legally just hours after the U.S. premiere, but thousands downloaded on BitTorrent anyway. Roughly 8.5% of downloads were from U.K. computers.

The Netherlands claimed fifth place, despite the fact that "Breaking Bad" premiered on public television there. With so many legal options, what's up with all the piracy?

TorrentFreak suggests that the problem lies with release delays. With people discussing the shows on social media as they watch, fans who have to wait are left out of the discussion and often come across spoilers.

There is also the issue of fixed time slots for broadcasting. The time simply doesn't work for a lot of people, which is why on-demand options like Netflix have become so popular.

I have to say, its their own fault for not sharing it with the world via global tv networks. Who in their right mind is gonna wait 5 weeks to find out whats going on? Then they go on Twitter and see loads of tweets about the plot line, people are bound to go looking.

    This.

And those who download where the show was broadcast on public television probably do so to watch it in their own time.

I was surprised it's pirated more than Game of Thrones, thought that was the most popular.

True, but it's actually much larger than that. Even it it were both "illegal" and "wrong", the means by which they enforce the law is worst than the breaking of the law OR doing the "wrong". Like Snowden says, I don't want to live in a world where my every utterance is recorded, my every keystroke is stored forever by my government for future scrutiny. The time to destroy this is now, it may already too late. There is a class of people that is perfectly willing to throw away the freedoms of all people, in exchange for the illusion of safety for just a few; themselves.

I say, it would be better for everyone else if those people were destroyed, as they are little more than frightened and useless parasites sucking the life energy of those that are not hobbled by fear of the unknown.

CVS Requires Customers to Show ID For Purchases of Nail Polish Remover, A Common Ingredient Found In Meth

CVS customers will be required to provide identification to purchase nail polish remover in new efforts to curb the illegal use of the chemical to create meth, and limit the number of bottles sold.

According to WPRI, CVS stores across Southern New England will be participating in asking customers for ID.

"Our policy limits the sale of these products in conjunction with other methamphetamine precursors and is based on various regulations requiring retailers to record sales of acetone," CVS Public Relations Director Mike DeAngelis told the Daily Mail.

CVS/Pharmacy also released the following statement about their policy change:

"Because acetone is an ingredient used in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine, we recently implemented a policy that a valid ID must be presented to purchase acetone-containing products such as nail polish remover. Our policy also limits the sale of these products in conjunction with other methamphetamine precursors and is based on various regulations requiring retailers to record sales of acetone."

Rhode Island CVS stores posted the following sign in their stores, according to WPRI:

"CVS/Pharmacy is helping to protect our community from the illegal making and use of methamphetamine because acetone can be used in the process. Valid I.D. must be presented to purchase acetone-containing products."

Asking for ID when someone wants to purchase nail polish remover is a store policy, and is reportedly not in accordance of any state laws or regulations.

After one week, CVS has dropped a new requirement for customers to show ID when purchasing nail polish remover in all but three states.

The drug store chain's policy capped the amount of acetone products a customer can purchase each day. Acetone, a common ingredient in many polish removers, is one of the ingredients used illegally to produce methamphetamine, the chain has said.

"After thoroughly reviewing our policies for the sale of products that contain acetone, in most states, we will no longer require customers to present an ID to purchase these products, including nail polish remover," CVS Public Relations Director Mike DeAngelis said.

DeAngelis noted the change will take effect before the end of this week, but CVS pharmacies will continue the policy in West Virginia, California, and Hawaii.

Back in 2010, the pharmacy chain was sued for allowing multiple purchases of cough medicines containing pseudoephedrine, an over-the-counter drug that can be used to produce methamphetamine, The New York Times reported.

Multiple acetone and pseudoephedrine purchases can be indicative of "smurfing," a practice that involves criminals buying small quantities of substances that can be used to make methamphetamine from many different drug stores.

Seeing an uptick in meth production, law enforcement officials have recently begun monitoring the purchase of some over-the-counter medicines.

Following the $77.6 million lawsuit, CVS changed its policies and began tracking the purchase of pseudoephedrine products.

Producers of Game of Thrones said that people pirating their show is good.

I wonder if producers of Breaking Bad feel the same way.

By the way, I just started watching this show and I'm hooked!
