Usually https is used when there is processing of sensitive data, like login and passwords, e-shop with payments etc. So that data is encrypted while moving back and forth between the server. However, since google has started to take https as a ranking signal (very little tho), lots of sites started to adapt https even to regular blogs and static sites. Browsers even warn about sites with http so it might be worth for a pleasant user experience.
