This sounds good but how can you find a site with comment spam? Every where i have been all have some type of spam protection. I do not even get comment spam but i guess i need traffic first.
Well anyway, can someone point me in the right direction to start my research

ok i think i have the first part done right
search for this phrase
"marketing" "powered by wordpress" "leave a comment" -"no comments"
out of 100 sites i see about 80 with no page rank so i do not want to coment on those right? I then search source code for no follow and i never find any. not 1 is this the proper way of searching for back links

You need to find your own way onto the spam highway.
It would make a lot of people happy here if I published a doorway into the spam community. But to be honest, I shoudn't have to do it anyway. Besides, it's a lot better if people don't all enter in the same location, as those locations will become overloaded and provoke a moderator response.
Think of websites you've seen with people leaving links in the comments. The internet is full to the brim with spam.

Do you feel leaving spam links should only be done, pointing to your linkwheels, doorway articles etc, and not posting spam links to your money site, just in case Google started punishing you for it?

Depends how concerned you are about your money site. I tend to make lots of sites / networks and drive heavy spam to everything, on all pages, linkwheels etc including money pages. I can afford to do my time in the sandbox because I have a lot of sites.
If you only have one site that you treasure as a white hat long term project, then blasting it with the backlinks you get with this method might cause you to be absent from the Google rankings for up to 4 months. If you are prepared to deal with this potential penalty, you'll come out the other side in a top position.
Just a quick comment..
If you are soooo worried about finding the right theme to put your link in..
simple do a search on google using the following syntax:
keyword site:domain.com
keywords being your keyword and domain being the domain found to have autoapproved comments on..
voila.. anchor text from a page that is relevant...

This comes with experience. You learn to spot the good links.
Usually, if a page will allow anyone to get a link, it will be a subpage like:
www.website.com/widgets/blue-widgets-good-news
or
www.website.com/2009/01/01/blue-widgets-here-to-stay
Avoid sites which are just:
www.website.com
The best way to learn is by experience. You get good at it quickly.

The problem a lot of people have with this method is that they can't find a place to start looking.
Here is a good place to start, with thousands of spammers to follow:

The site is no good as it's nofollow, but the fact I'm not using it is the reason I can post it here. Pick and choose from these comment spammers and see what else they have to offer.

Great method to get backlinks.
For those who start using this to get backlinks the problem is that it is hard to find a spammer who spams not only nofollow blogs but some d0follow too. Just keep trying and eventually you will find one. From there it is easy to find spammers who spam ******** blogs.
Also sometimes you find ******** backlinks on a pr0 page. It's a good idea to do site:http://www.example.com search in google and then sort pages by PR using seoquake. Might find some pages with high PR.

Even better, build a few honeypot blogs that allow d0follow comments and see analyze the sites that are commenting on them
