I'm just starting in this and if you can point valuable resource to jump start me in the field i will really appreciate it! :)

Remember to google info:domain.com for any site you are interested in buying to make sure it isn't faked. If a different site shows up as the first result it is fake. Also check the PR of some of the backlinks. MajesticSEO is good for this. If none of it's backlinks have PR you can expect it won't keep its PR.

Take membership of different sites that provide expired domain lists. When you have the list, check them in bulk PR checker, if you find any domain with PR, check if it is fake or not. If its real then go ahead and register it.
 
Register compass is a great site to buy high PR site. It does all the work for you like:

PR, BackLinks Count, Indexed Pages, Archieve From Waybackmachine plus lots of other indicators to choose a good and valid domain.
