I have nothing to offer for the "references" part because these are usually books and other "heavy publications".
If you meant "notes", then I link to a specific page, to which I added a "confirmation" to the sentence that needed a citation.
With "External Links", I try to go for general keywords rather than for those that I'm competing for, but sometimes it works either way.
