Guide me with my first ever project

A little background about me -
A hardcore IT guy, 40 years of age, been in the industry for over 19 years managing Linux servers and now into cloud automation. Due to almost all aspects of my jobs fully automated now, I have enough free time to learn about internet marketing or SEO in general. I signed up here with BHW a few years ago just out of curiosity but never actually followed up.

What I have so far?
After reading a few articles on keyword research during last weekend and going through "Godaddy Expired Domains", I have found an EMD of a domain that sounds interesting to me.

Domain - 16 characters EMD (no symbols, no numbers)
- Keyword Ahrefs report
difficulty : 1
global-search-volume : 1000
ahrefs-note : "We estimate that you'll need backlinks from ~2 websites to rank in top 10 for this keyword"

What I have decided so far?
1. Buy the domain
2. Setup wordpress with usual plugins and a decent looking design
3. Get atleast 5 articles written on the subject, long enough and readable (nothing automated)
4. Buy link building service and get about 20-25 links built to my domain with different keywords

Does this sound like a good start? The competition is low and I am not necessarily trying to make money with it. I am just trying to understand SEO ranking with this project as I believe that "too much planning ruins the plan".

I am asking for your guidance in terms of where is my plan going wrong or what can I do to improve it in terms of ranking and SEO.

You got 5 articles on the same topic that you will post on a single website?
If that's the case then you should merge it into one otherwise you will have a problem with keyword cannibalization.

I am trying to make sense of what you suggested. For example, if my domain name is "buynewcar.com", I am thinking of having articles around "how to buy a new car?" "what to check while buying a new car?" "best new car reviews" etc etc. Is that not a good idea?

Also, if all the articles are merged in a giant page, it really won't be readable and I am sure nobody would like to go through the entire piece. Also, the only monetizing for the niche that I've decided is amazon affiliate. So 1 HUGE page of information and other with information on the product would look "shallow", wouldn't it? What do you suggest.

Alex has a good point, you can always rewrite article or two to be optimized for a specific keyword. Don't mix them that's never a good thing to do. When writing articles pay attention to kw saturation.

Of course that is the way to go your first kw should in this case be "buy new car" since you have EMD doesn't mean a thing if you don't use it as main KW.
I would't merge it i would optimize article per keyword.


Example:

I was thinking one day i should "buy a new car" and then i went to the auto dealers and said i want to "buy a new car" what do you recommend?! etc...

Just go for it? Test some stuff, try some ideas. Most people here learned from failing.

In this case, I would write two articles, the one for "how to buy a new car?" + "what to check while buying a new car?" and one for "best new car reviews".

You can rank for thousands of keywords with just one article.

If the topic is same there is no point in writing separated articles.

That's the name of the game! As I mentioned, I don't believe in over-planning. But its always good to have enough of pre-launch data nd metrics to evaluate where you failed and how you fix that. There's no way to learn from failing if you can't figure out what to fix.
