I'm totally new to the concept of guest posting, so excuse me for asking (probably) a very basic question. (Also I'm not entirely sure this in the right sub-forum to post it in?)

Either way: When guest posting, I assume your post is linked to a profile.
Does each website you guestpost on create you a new profile, or is there a cross website profile platform, such as discus or something similar?

I hope that makes sense & please reply!

When you create a guest-post you write a new article and let it be published on another persons blog. This way the receiving blog gets some quality content and you, in return, receive a contextual backlink from that article to your own blog or website.

I'd rather get a link on the content than the link profile.

I assume you mean user account in the blog you are about to post, if thats the case than you don't need that and its not working that way. If blog owner accepts guest posts he will post your content with link to your site and you just send him content and he will publish it.
Large blogs has such setups - if you are an authority author and your content offers value and quality, and you are going to post constantly then they can create an authors account for you in their blog.

So is it up to me to include links to my website in the guest post I am writing?

    Gotcha!

    Hyperlinked? Or just raw links?

I normally add something along the lines of "thanks for the guest-post opportunity and.... something something .... you can find more on <link>Blogname/here/something</link>"
