Guest posts are links placed into new articles where you have more control over the content and title

Niche edits are links placed within aged/existing content.
Guest posts are links placed within a new page/content.
Both have value within your link portfolio. I like niche edits because they push instant authority once re-indexed. With guest posts, I always tier them with niche edits, to increase the authority of the page, so it takes a bit of time for the value (as a link) to be realized (not always, but in most cases).

Hmm, makes sense. I was considering buying a 5 pack of MisterF guest posts just for branding while at the same time purchasing 1-3 niche edits for exact match.
I’m worried G will ding us if the niche edits get indexed that much faster and our anchor texts get all messed up. (Until the guest posts kick him)

Both have their own benefits. But Niche Edits give much power in a shorter time than Guest Post.
As Niche Edit link is placed in the aged article which is already indexed in Google, and might have some links from other sites or from its own website, which increases the power of that post.
But in Guest Post, newly article is published with no link to it.

both are good you can try both for your portfolio.
That would be workable, and we'd advise on anchors etc too.

Personally, i favor more Guest posts. You could grab few from freebie section. You'll just have to sort out the content.

I think niche edits on posts/articles that are already ranking with links pointing to them would be much more powerful because they already have authority.
But niche edits on articles that have no authority are not worth it at all.
If, you're contemplating what option to go for between guest posts and niche edits, go for niche edits with authority(SE ranks and baclinks) otherwise, go for guest post.
Finally, if you have the budget go for both.
