GST Interpretation that could screw Indian Affiliate Marketers

Guys, my CA just told me about considering the GST thing.

Any update from anyone on this? If the earning from Amazon affiliate exceeds 20 lakh, then what are the things to make sure to avoid any trouble in future?

if you haven't registered for GST and sell products on amazon, how do you get returns on purchases you made for products? if you are selling products, then its beneficial to have GST number as you can get back the 18% GST you paid while purchasing those products

He's talking about affiliate income. Amazon doesn't even let you list a product if you don't have a GST number.

I was referring to Amazon Associates earning :)

That's true.

That's true.
My friend's dad has a auto-loom. But there is (or used to be) some rule in my state (MH) that if auto-loom's annual turnover exceeds 2 Crores, then it wasn't eligible for some government's scheme. So, he had multiple businesses registered, each having turnover less than 2 crore. That's unethical, but its one way to avoid GST

Yeah, heard of this.

I earned 35 lakh but I read somewhere that I have to obtain GST and file 0% GST as well.

Not getting, how much income tax I have to pay due to GST thing. I am complete noob when it comes to income tax and all.

If you are over 20 lakh, you have to register for GST. If your earnings are from Amazon USA, you can file zero rated returns. It's not the same as nil returns btw.

If you are liable to reverse charge on input purchases (ex import of service like semrush), you have to register even if your revenue is 20 rupees. Many don't know this, it's also not much enforced.

Thank you for sharing the info about SEMrush thing Vijay.

So, if I register for GST and file zero returns as well. Do I get extra tax to pay? Or it's just that 30% bracket one?

You can file zero rated returns for export. But keep firc or some form of remittance slip with you.
Your income tax is not related to gst. You have to pay as per your slab. Contact a CA or an accounting firm.

This is getting so confusing now :weep:
What part? The reverse charge liability means registration compulsory thing? It's not much enforced.. also you can choose to make such import of service purchases through your spouse or parents to completely avoid any possible of litigation.

I did the same thing, but CA was involved and he did all the calculations. So not completely worried.

However, this time, he suggested getting GST as earnings are above 20 lakh.

@vijayj Will FIRC's soft copy work? I have all FIRC of Payoneer with me which they provide for every transaction.

Take printout of firc Soft copy. These days even remittance advice will do.

Apologies to bump this thread, but I'm incredibly confused if GST is needed for Amazon affiliate or not.

1. Do we need GST registration compulsorily? Some resources point that we need registration only if there's a turnover >20L, while others say it is not needed
2. If I target only Amazon affiliate program in India, would I need to pay 18% GST?

amazon affiliate program doesn't need GST but if you are an amazon seller then you need GST regardless of your turnover

Thank you! So all the income I make via Amazon affiliate would be taxed normally based on my income tax slabs, correct? No other compliance is needed?

Not needing a GST registration is a relief.

Income from affiliate marketing is income from a profession. You need to register for GST.
You'll pay GST if Amazon India is paying you. And if Amazon US is paying you in US dollars then you don't have to pay GST but still register for it and file nil GST returns.

The new website I intend to create is India specific, so only Amazon India would pay me. So I do need a GST registration? Can I register as an individual without creating a company?
Does Amazon India deduct the GST while paying me?
Would it complicate things if I buy group buy services? Do I need to go legit and purchase subscriptions if I register for GST?

I appreciate all the help!

If it's India specific then you can register for GST once you cross 20 lacs in turnover.
No company deducts GST while paying you. They can deduct TDS though. I'm not aware of Amazon India's payment policies.
I'm not sure what do you mean by your last question.
