Is there anyone here that fits into the grey hat bracket? I love this forum and joined it to learn about some new stuff - im involved in twitter marketing and that's where I fit in here most I think (I've learned loads of stuff here related to that).

But as far as websites are concerned, my main website is really in the grey hat zone - it is a long term website with alot of hand written content and it's sort of above board - the only thing I've done on there is some "link building" (the expensive way).

It's been a slow process and it's now beginning to pay off. Just wondering if there are people here with similar projects - long-running sites that you try to keep under the radar???

Not sure exactly what your asking....

Most of us our grey hat. We have our white hat sites, black hat sites, and some in between. Depends on the project(s) we are working on at the moment.

Most of us do more than 1 thing in IM.

Ok that's cool - ha I know you all do more than one thing in IM - I just got the impression here that it's mostly about auto-content, mass backlink building all done on a large scale - I'm interested in tactics people use for their longer term sites.

For example my site is currently ranked 16th for what I think is a high competition keyword (need to check in samurai tomorrow), want to get it on page 1 but want to do it subtly because this site is my baby

If you want to keep it legit then just build manual links and good content.

That's good to know. Well I have bought a couple of links today - on high pr sites (multi-page) and with my target keyword as the link text - it's a high competition keyword - I ran it through Market Samuri and it said something like up to 17,000 daily clicks for position 1 (which in my book is alot).

Anyway, I am currently 2nd page so just wanted to document it here, and I will post in a month or so and let you know the results (I feel like this is a slow move for this site, but I'm playing the long game).

In simple and easy way the combination of white hat SEO and black hat SEO called Grey Hat SEO. When you are doing white hat SEO and after that doing black hat SEO simultaneously is called Grey hat SEO.

If you are buying, trading, or building backlinks - doesn't that mean that you are blackhat. I always thought of true whitehat as adding content and hoping that someone links back to your site.

Black hat, grey hat. The key is to diversify.

When I do grey hat, I try to err on the safe side. Very careful with my backlinks. As much unique content possible. I tend to be very patient with this. Let the domain age factor kicks in, etc.

Of course, I have a few dozen experiments that are pure blackhat Well may be in the shade of dark grey, but you get what I mean...

What I found, sometimes grey or white doesn't always mean safer. It may not get you deindexed, but in terms of rankings, you know... black hat done right still works.

Wasn't greyhat a synonym for the first web2 blogging strategy where people would search for previously active wordpress or blogger blogs and re-register them again, just like using juice and traffic of expired domains, but with the difference of zero cost and faster effectivity?
