Newbie here.

I decided to start a micro niche site in health category and wanted to do some keyword research.
After getting some work outsourced, I got a long tail keyword, which I would very much like to work upon, but I am in doubt whether it is worth the effort.

Simply, whether I can rank it in google after working my ass off.

The details are as follows.
  1. 4 word keyword
  2. CPC is 0.66 US$ :(
  3. keyword competitiveness is 42
  4. medium advertiser competition
  5. monthly searches approximately 1K
These are based on long tail pro.

I want your opinion, whether to go for it or not. Please consider that this will be my pilot project, and friendly advice is very much appreciated.

The alternative is not advertising. If you don't, I can tell you the exact results: no sales. Not that advertising in PPC or even SEO will get you sales but without traffic of any kind, I guarantee no sales. So I say go for it.

A four-word keyword? All that tells me is that at least it appears you are being specific which is good. You are not too broad and that's a good thing.

CPC is irrelevant. It looks like you don't like the fact it will be $0.66. I think you also mean that's the recommended bid, not what you'll actually pay which is determined by what others are bidding and your ad quality. That's the market at work. The real question is how many of your visitors will you convert and how much profit you make from each sale. You must look at PPC as a profit center, not an expense.

Along the same lines, who cares about keyword competitiveness. If you are afraid of competition, you'd never do anything in life.

Search volumes are what they are and nothing you can do about it. Obviously, this is not a product that is in high demand or that people think about. But if you reach a few of those and make a sale each month, you've made one more sale than you have not otherwise. That's a success, especially if you've made a profit.

I have a client with many such products (hundreds) that have maybe 1K searches per year or even less. Add those up and that's a few sales each day. So unless that's the only product you have, not something to expect making a living off of.

You are also just starting out so expect to make mistakes and thus lose some money. Look at it as a learning experience.

Hey LucidMarketing,

Thanks a lot for your reply. It gave me a nag to start thinking with insight.

I would like to clarify some things and to express some of my feelings as a newbie, so that you can clear them out.
  1. You suggest that I should advertise the site other than SEO to get some traffic in order to be successful. Thanks for bringing it up.
  2. About the keyword length, I chose it for more targeted traffic i.e, picking out a subset from the big market.
  3. Actually, I`m not too much concerned about the CPC value, because it can vary even country wise. But, my primary plan of getting an income was through adsense. I would definitely go for affiliate marketing if a good traffic is generated, so what matters most is getting a reasonably sized audience.
  4. I think the search volume is low because of the length of the keyword.
  5. About the keyword competitiveness, I`m really afraid. I cannot compete with big sharks. I would like to grab the tid bit that they have left unknowingly in their own pursuits, and optimize my site for that keyword. From many tutorials and posts that I came across, a lesson that I repeatedly saw was to get a long tail keyword, with sufficient monthly search volume, and ability to rank easily. If your opinion is different, can you please elaborate on that. I am not arguing, just asking for help.
  6. I really appreciate the last bit of advice and accept that.
