Green$ from Zeen.com!

So, I walked into a few (9) Zeen
keyword clones. As we all know, Zeen is the new site from the Youtube people. They are already 136,000 in Alexa USA rank and not even open yet. I "heard" of youtube clones for porn. These are not live, and I am not trying to draw any traffic here. This an idea.

It seems that posting pictures to make a magazine could do well with niche content too. People love their wine, beer and well...sex too. Hmmmm? They "wiki" it up. Remember when that was just one site. I say let big business do the branding and a keyword niche is born.

I don't know man, Zeen din't even launch yet..

I think it would work but you will run up against copyright issues.

You can have porntube.com because "tube" is not copyrighted by youtube but I imagine that "zeen" is or will be copyrighted. Thus, your domain could easily be seized.

Wiki is different too, since they didn't copyright part of their name, so pornwiki.com is fine but pornwikipedia.com would be an infringement.

True, but it cost a total of$70 to re-up all those urls next year. I figure, it costs me $70 a year to find out.

Interesting...Thank you for the input. I found EL-Zeen and Dezeen on the internet (can't add full url here). Not sure how they get around it.

I'd imagine they haven't starting chasing trademark infringers yet, but some brands never go after trademark infringers so you may be lucky.

However, if the domain lay dormant, they can seek to enjoin your use of the now trademarked word in a manner that serves to dilute the value of the trademark or otherwise confuse the market as to any association or affiliation between your site and the owner of the mark.

The use of a word or term in the market makes it more difficult to trademark the same, and in some cases a trademark owner can lose a mark if it falls into the public domain and becomes a generic term for an item or service (e.g. aspirin).

I searched for "zeen" in Google, and the second result is a PR7, years old architecture site named dezeen. Now can they seize it? I bet no.

Yes, and dezeen is a magazine website for years. They have been using the term zeen for years. Sorry, youtube people, you didn't invent zeen. Its also all over the place in urban dictionary. :sly:Maybe that's why they have been building this so quietly.

ive just bought a couple of zeens,well the .com and info of the same $12 all in . i think ill get some content on there using facebook dudes google trends plug in before they get up and running and see if i can get a new adsense account on it .this could be a good idea to try and flip them pretty quick before the lawsuits start.

good idea, just make and flip. I dont see the point of adsense unless its to get the site sold (you cant make to much money before they start the lawsuits.. or can you?) then again i am not much of a site flipper..

im not much of 1 myself but from what i read from our experts if the site is generating cash then you can multiply that 8 and you got your value but no income is obviously going to appeal to less people .

Again, I am not sure about these suits coming. No trademark, multiple domains with a similar idea with a magazine being "zeen", HP owning a trademark "zeen". Doesn't add up. Too many factors. Wishful, maybe, but these are really disputable facts if they ever had issue.

I think that expectations from that website are too big here. It doesn't mean anything that owners were connected with Youtube startup.

Youtube made success because it was first to provide the answer with huge demand, can't see why Zeen would be anything special.

PM me with list of usernames and emails and i will bulk secure usernames on Zeen for you. But you will have to verify emails yourself

Good luck - there is so much more to trademark protection than a word.

How it's used and the similiarity to another mark weighs in heavily. Make a bunch of websites that mimmick the mark's website and you'll discover what I'm talking about. Others using a trademark in a dissimilar method will not create consumer confusion. Creating video websites for a video trademark will certainly cause consumer confusion.

The first question asked at deposition will be out of all the dictionary terms available why did you pick zeen if not to try and divert traffic from the zeen mark holder? Good luck trying to answer that one. You'd be like shooting fish in a barrel to IP Attorneys. They see this sort of stuff everyday and have their questions at the ready. You chose zeen because you heard zeen was going to be huge. You knew there would be an advertising campaign launching zeen and you're trying to divert some of that traffic to your copycat websites. If these guys spend the money to create the trademark they'll have the money to protect it.

Drive it until the wheels fall off and you get your C&D but don't argue you have a valid excuse. You won't have a leg to stand on if they trademark zeen as a video website and you create video websites with zeen in the domain name. You are creating the websites after the press release so no mystery as to why you chose zeen domains. Brand dillution absolutely, banking on consumer confusion positively!

Well thought out and intelligently stated. You know so much, but actually, we have my own ideas for these sites. There are any number of ways to vary content and structure of the site.

I have been visiting dezeen as interior designer for years. 2007, I think.

ive just checked out the word zeen , its actually a christian name that means creative and jamaican slang for scene . i dont think you can copyright a christian name ,maybe a slang word if you can prove you created the name . the other thing is op is talking about using a word that ends in zeen ,this would take some proving that you didnt invent the phrase washingmazeen or magazeen for example
