Anyways it took me about six months to get my site up to the first page for a pretty competitive keyword......this is for an ecommerce site we rank #5 but traffic to it is still low? I rank pretty well for similar keywords. Anyway to boost up traffic? I mean we are number 5

You might want to check that you are actually ranking that high. Try looking through a proxy or on a friend's computer. If you are actually #5 it could just be poor kw choice.

Exactly. You can use proxies or tools to find your real rankings. Google personalizes your search results without telling you and you then end up thinking that your SEO effort have paid off. Happend to me a lot of times, so I now use proxies to check my real rankings.

I have looked at many different computers and I am number 5 for the keyterm...the poor KW choice is possible however I am doing fairly well for other related searches are there any ideas on what can be done? I am currently trying to rank for a kw with 10K a month...this will be my next task but this KW term is 2K actually but highly competitive and is the main thing i am selling

It seems like you would get a lot more traffic I know. First of all is 2k the EXACT or the broad amount of traffic and also is it the GLOBAL or the LOCAL. Assuming it is the EXACT and the LOCAL (this is usually the best guide to go by) and the keyword gets 2k a month and your position 5,

Generally you can expect something like this

#1 will get about 40% of traffic
#2 about 20-25%
#3 about 10%
#'s 4-10 on the first page can expect about 3% or less which is where you are

So with 2k a month and 3% of the traffic your looking at only 2-3 visitors a day so if your getting more than that then your actually doing good. Try to get it to #1 and you will be looking at more like 25-26 visits a day witch is of coarse significantly larger.

I usually don't mess with working on a keyword that has less than 5k EXACT AND LOCAL unless I feel I will have no problem making number 1, because although every little bit helps I don't feel 1-2 hits a day is worth my time when I could be using it on a KW with more traffic.

Good luck though and just keep doing what your doing

These are all exact matches...Exact and Local we are actually getting about 30-40 hits a day. The thing is its a ecommerce site but I guess I can aim for that number one spot as that is what i have been thinking. My boss actually wants to go ahead and try PPC since it does increase traffic thanks for the insight and break down

#5 on a keyword for 2k searches a month isn't going to get you squat in the way of traffic.

Aim for #1

I had similar issues with this too but my keyword is more competitive like 600k (Global) searches per month and 200k searches in the local scene. I've been on page 1 and ranks 6th but my traffic is really low. The odd part is that when I was on third page I got much higher traffic. I've tested it with different proxies and it varies on the 4th to 8th. My page is not penalized or somethiing but this is really really odd. Need to test what would happen to my traffic in the next few months. I'll try optimizing other keywords for my site instead of being stucked with this one
