Great on-site SEO these days

Google does not like keyword stuffing, we all know this, but what are the new rules?


Obviously back in the day your title tags would of been like this:
Keyword 1 | keywords 2 | keyword 3 | brand name


Nowadays it's better like this:
Brand name keyword 1


Back in the day you'd bang your keywords in H1, H2 and H3, you would also bang your keywords in your paragraphs bold, italic as anchor text at the beginning of paragraphs...


My questions is, has this changed now too? If so - what are the new god damn rules before I slapped!?

There are no rules. Most people suggest building a site for visitors rather than for search engines. Natural language will give you proper keyword density.

The reason I am asking is because one of my clients is rebuilding their website, and their new design is a just a big ass picture - with a menu of the left hand side. Other than the menu there is no writing. Nothing.


I can maybe SEO the image with alt text but surely that's not going to be enough....


I want to tell them NO but want to be sure before I do.


On the other hand the site looks nice.
 
This has been a major problem for ages. Google likes, first and foremost, content. And if the site fails to provide content it will also have more difficulty ranking for its keywords than its competitors that do provide (thematic) content.

Wouldn't your client be happy with a middle ground solution, though? You could use the image-heavy design but re-do it so that there would still be content added as well. This could even be put below the fold so it wouldn't be too prominent / wouldn't ruin the overall look of the site.

As for alt tags and everything else that fall in this category (meta tags, proper useage of H1, H2, etc.) - all of this is good if its done right as it will help Google to identify what the site is about but don't expect it to have any real impact on your SERPs.

All in all, what matters most is obviously links. If you have loads of quality links then you will rank well even with horrible on-site optimisation, or you can have the best website in the world but no links and you won't rank for anything. With that said, it's often beneficial not to over-think on-site SEO.
 
Reading all of the SEO blogs I frequent and searching for good onsite SEO in 2013 it seems as though its the same game. About 2% keyword on the money page and a few LSI's obviously.

Make it a very informative natural website.
 
My top choices are simply Keyword in URL, Title and H1 or H2 heading. 3% or 4% in content. Just imo.
 
do you have access for Seomoz?
I just use the on page tool for every on-page optimization and for internal links link just related content semantically...

This is the worst thing you can do.

Without proper on page SEO, the search engines will not understand exactly what the page is about. When this happens, the visitors you get will not find exactly what they were looking for. This drives up your bounce rate, and drives down your ranking for the keyword. Worse, these visitors are much less likely to convert to customers, because they were not looking for what the page gives them.

When you do your onpage SEO right, visitors will stick around, decreasing your bounce rate, helping your ranking, because they will find what they searched for.

If you have traffic that does not convert, look to your on-page SEO.

Backlinks are a dying metric, more and more types of links are being devalued year after year. Even today, a bunch of links unrelated to the content of your site may actually harm your site. This problem compounds when the search engines misunderstand the content of the site. What is relative appears to not be related if the search engines have the focus of the page wrong.

nothing is changed but the content with traffic is more valuable now.
 
Onsite SEO is a craft. I usually follow basic outlines such as best keywords in meta title, a keyword or two in meta description (natural, no stuffing), main keyword in h1, and main keyword in slug tag www.site.com/keyword. If I have sub keywords that have separate pages I will try to weave them in such as www.site.com/keyword1/extra long tail word or sub section of keyword. Slug tags are definitely an art, if you can weave multiple keywords into one url structure that doesn't look stuffy, it works wonders.

Bhopkins got it right dont try to hard with keyword desnsity and all that just make sure your viewers are going to find it helpful and good.
