I think long articles get the most shares because only people with a large following will actually write a long post.

Do you think someone with a low following will write a 1,000 words post? NO

But some big ass page will and therefor it will get a lot of shares because its a big page.

Just my assumption

Yeap. Buffer company recently published factor about words of post and sharing social. 1000-1500 words content gets 1000-2000 share, likes, pinit, re-tweet and much more social fuel on "FIRE".

One could always write a 1000-1500 word article that has 2-3 sections, then rewrite it as 2-3 separate articles. Original get posted to the site for better onpage SEO, traffic and shares, while the rewrites can go to Web 2.0s et al for link building purposes.
