This is a method tested by me on a very tough keyword, it took me like 3 months to get to #1 from page 5 in Google. The method works well with 2 variations...so it's up to you what path you choose...
REQUIREMENTS: Basic html, css and php knowledge.
Here are the steps:
1. Go to official Wordpress themes section and choose from there a simple yet attractive theme and download it to your computer.
2. Edit the theme so as to make it unique, change the graphics, colors. If you are good at PHP, edit the functions name to make it more different, add a new function that will attract people, like Google, Facebook and Twitter buttons.
3. Place your link to the footer area. Make sure you leave there the link to Wordpress.
4. Upload the theme to Wordpress. You'll need an account for that and a little bit of luck...sometimes the edited theme doesn't meet the requirements and gets rejected...but you can modify it and try again.
The key for this method to work is to reuse already made themes from Wordpress only...they are already accepted and you go for a WIN.
After your theme becomes public, make some promo campaign on FB, Twitter, or post some articles with cool themes to use and include that theme too...Soon people will start to use the theme and you'll get the credits.
If you get lucky, some big blogs will use it and you will get a lot of link juice from their high PR.
