You'll probably be hoping he responds for a long time. The OP started this thread over 2 years ago, stopped responding in this thread a few months later and hasn't even logged into BHW for over a year now.

To answer your questions though, the best place to get inspiration is to just pay attention to other logos. Hopefully as a graphic design student you've already got a fairly good grasp on the principles and elements of art and design. Really look at existing logos to see how they use those composition concepts.

To figure out coloring methods, you can search youtube for tutorial videos. There are 1000's on illustrator that will go over many specific ways to deal with coloring. Since you're already a student and using cs5, you should be able to follow even the videos covering advanced and complex methods.

I think Illustrator is best when it comes to logo and mascot design because the resolution or pixels of the image will not change even if you enlarge or make it smaller. Photoshop is best used at web design and other graphic designs. Goodluck!
