how long will it take paypal to shut my account down when you get the "please provide your tax id number email"

We're asking for your tax ID number due to new IRS rules. Your tax ID
    number is one of these:
    - Your Social Security number
    - Your Individual Tax Identification Number
    - Your Employer Identification Number

We'll use your tax ID number to send tax Form 1099-K to you and the IRS
when the payments you receive exceed both of these milestones in a calendar
    year:
    - $20,000 in gross payment volume for goods and services
    - 200 payments

I've gotten two orders since I got this email so it's working so far.

Any known work arounds for this other than giving them my SSN#

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Simple call the IRS TAX ID line. Google TAX ID number. Do the automated system and they will provide you the TAX ID number and the form saying that you are that company. You will have to use your real information to get this form but who cares the IRS already knows who you are. Then send to Paypal and you are verified.

It is illegal in every state for any person/company to ask you for your SSN# unless for employment reasons. I have gotten out several times by quoting that law to them.

I agree with onlythabst I used to work at a place where you had to give a social security number to get an account but guess what, when people really fought it hard, we would compromise by getting some other type of information.

as far as the tax id number I didn't realize it was so easy to get one. Thanks.

I am not a lawyer or play one on TV, but I think you are wrong. A few years ago, Enterprise Car Rental tracked your account by SSN but hey don't do that any more. This is what I believe the law was referring to.

You can not open a bank account, a stock account, a credit card account and a lot of other things that involve money without providing a SSN or an EIN so that the government can track your transactions and take their share. If I pay an independent contractor more than $600 in one year, the law requires me to file a tax form that includes a SSN so that the IRS can track it.

My two cents, you have a business. You sell or what ever to generate revenue. You probably have expenses that you can use to reduce that to a net profit. Therefore you should probably act like it is a business versus a hobby so you can stay out of trouble. If you mess with the IRS, you will probably loose or it will cost you a whole lot of money because they have unlimited resources.

Yeah, you idiot, that is because you HIRED a contractor. Notice that has to do with employment which is what I mentioned before as the only reason to have to file/give a SSN.

And you can open a bank account and other things without giving a SSN because of the law!

Really?? Come on guys they want your taxi ID number because it is the law. They have to report the income they pay you to the IRS. Any payments over $600 in one year require a company to file a 1099 for whoever it was they paid.

It's pretty simple and I understand the law.

I had another account years ago that was frozen. I got my money back but I'm afraid they will close this account once I post my SS#.

I went 10 months last year, and into this year with out an issue because I could not decide which company I wanted to claim the income. Of course things change, so be safe.
