I have some wh sites with good content (flash, video embedded, etc.) that go viral like crazy on fb and get a lot of likes/shares. While going through them today, my PR extension in chrome showed PR 4 for one of the sites. I checked rest of the similar sites and some of them got PR too. And the only thing is that they got tonnes of fb likes and shares but no backlinks. Also they are just single-page sites. Here are their stats:

+1s: 1
Tweets: 156
PR 4

+1s: 1
Tweets: 88
PR 2

+1s: 0
Tweets: 81
PR 1

Looks like social media especially fb likes plays a pretty good part in SEO as we can see here site with single pages gaining PR with zero backlinks. Any thoughts on this?

wow, congrats amigo. That's seriously awesome!!!
guess this will encourage alot of rookie marketers to use facebook for marketing purposes.

That is great news. Congrats. Had no idea likes could do that to your PR

So people are sharing a link to your single page site on FB or are they sharing you fanpage that has a link?

I have a fan page on facebook with some seriously competitive keywords. I've only had it 2 weeks and it's already hit the front page with 84 likes. Beats the hell out of me.

Well, FB likes do help a lot.. But I didn't know that it helps to increase PR as well.
Congrats anyway..

I have posted something interesting in Jr-Ex vip area regarding this. I will ask some mod if I can make it public. Your observation is absolutely right btw. I have some proven case studies to complement yours.

Interesting observations. Might have to execute my own case study on this. Are your sites showing any external backlinks?

I'm curious how you know you don't have any backlinks? Is there some absolute way of knowing whether or not you have backlinks? A PR update happened a few days ago, webmaster tools updates slowly ... how do people reliably determine whether they have backlinks or not.

I don't think fb like has anything to do with it,google has been spreading pr love immensely nowdays.I have one site with two page where the main page is pr 4 and inner 2 pages are pr3 each and the site has only 2 backlinks.

I agree. WHat are you using to check your backlinks? You may have backlinks that you just do not know about

This is correct.I have a facebook page that is number 1 for a success keyword.it gets 1000 visits per month from google. so if your website is linked to the page with a high page rank.I am sure it will affect.the likes dont mean anything. My page has been number 1 from the 1st week.

The number of likes is a very important indicator actually. However its just one indicator from a group of others.

There are various other indicators like

- Overall page activity which google can crawl by graph API.
- Comments in wall posts which are crawl-able by graph API.
- Likes in the Page's Wall posts which are crawl-able by graph API.

All these are indicators which effect the PR of your fan-page.

However the primary indicator is likes, more the likes , higher the page will rank on google.

Interesting, is this Panda at work showing more love for Web 2.0?

Congrats on the PR 4...that's not easy to do.

I think this may be a case of correlation vs causation. If people are sharing your site on FB/twitter than there is a good chance people are also linking to you naturally (which is the best type of link building). My brother has a site that gets shared 100s of times a week on FB/twitter and he hasn't done any link building. It already has 2,300+ natural links coming from 271 different websites and is already a PR 4.

Pretty crazy...

I'll have to rethink how to use fb -haven't been all that successful using it for other marketing purposes, but it's been awhile
