I got my first SEO client some hours back. Basically he has an electricity

company in a small town of a major city in his country and wants to generate more

leads.

Till now he has only been doing business in that small town in his city. He

gets calls from his google place listing and is number 3-4 on google because

of EMD even though it has less than 20-25 backlinks and no keyword in title.

Now he is interested in doing business from big towns of his city.

I just took a look at some keywords for that city and competition and i am seeing pr 3 pr 5 sites which are very old but hardly 2-3 in top 10

have keyword in title and almost none have an EMD.

Now i am by no means a SEO guru, i just manage to rank low competition terms with EMDs and some ordinary links

Do u think I will be able to rank with an EMD and beat those sites which have many backlinks but no EMD or keyword in title :o

Will it be posible to get a google place listing for a new site and have it in top 10 :06: i have never ever done local SEO or anythign about that as such :(

please help me guyz :thinking:

What is EMD?
For google places you need to use citations. It's like anchor text for websites.

Its really great that he got an EMD. EMD Reduces ~20% Off Site SEO work. If he is already ranking on top 4 with just 25 backlinks and with poor On Site SEO, then am sure that it won't be that hard to get him ranked on top position with Well Optimized On Site SEO and with Quality Backlinks.

No Matter if those competitor's PR are 3-5 cos getting PR5 is not that hard. Look at how much backlinks they have and from how many unique domains. Look at how many subpages and root domains are ranking in top 10 and see if there is any directories like yellowpages. Thats how you estimate competition and build your backlink strategy.

Also you wrote that none of those competiting sites have keyword in title. So it must be easy peasy to rank on top 5 or even in top position.

I don't mind if you want me to analyze that keyword and tell you how to move forward! :)
 
pimp his site, build good links and you are number one it isn't that hard local SEO
 
ya man just build some whitehat links for him and you'll be fine. Loook for domains with the city in the URL and try to get some backlinks from them. City hall, charities he donates to, etc.

It is very diffcult ranking without EMD... I do it all the time because I believe in brand building as Google wants us to do.

Just thought I would chime in my 2 cents... the PR of the sites ranking on the first page for the keywords means nothing in terms of how optimised they are.. You need to look at the entire websites content, backlink profile, anchor text, link diversity, and determine from this how much effort and work is needed to beat them.

You ask is it possible to rank a site above these? Yes - providing you put in the right strategy and work to make it happen :)
