My site got hit really badly by a recent G update. Traffic and impressions almost halved in a day. What should I do to start recovering and get back to my previous metric? Any tips from the experts here will be really helpful.

horrible , without waiting nothing much to do,, wait few days , edit the content , remove affiliate links and lets see what happens

Wait a few days until things have settled. Don’t do panic changes or you might end up messing everything up even more.

Sure. Also, this is a genuine site with great human-written content.

One of my friends also got hit, If you are in a competitive niche like above 40 kd, google is giving preference to more authority websites.

Also if building links is more important now just relaying on content is not going to cut it.

And your site is not hit by an algorithm, its algorithm now gives preference to more authority & relevant websites.

Like I said, google soon will manually pin SERP results for every f**** search keyword. I am sure they have the labour to do that.

we need more information about your site to assess the situation - number of articles, what kind of content, backlinks, etc

Most important thing to do is to improve the content on your website.

For what it's worth: I follow via ahrefs a site that gets most of their backlinks from free sources. They are in a grey zone industry so they don't really have much choice. They got hit in May, doubled down and built an insane amount of DA through contextual backlinks. Got some of their traffic back - not all by the total amount but they rank better for the keywords that are cornerstone for them.

IMO, the best way is to start working towards relying on organic traffic less.

My site didn't even get hit by any update but by some kind of Google bug. It lost 70% of traffic for no reason.
