Got Client - Need Advice

I took a break from SEO and all that stuff and I am trying to get back on it. I just got a new client that wants to rank his website for one word keyword and rank it #1 on the specific Google for a country.

I am looking for some sort of tips on:
1. how to sell myself to him (sign contract and get paid well as he wants me to provide a proposal)
2. current white hat techniques
3. program for keyword research (Google Keyword Tool is gone now and I have no clue how to use that new tool).
4. some sort of progress tracking so I can show him that I am doing work.
5. how to make sure that I am not responsible for Google updates and all that stuff in case website goes down?

Thank you so much. I know that is a lot of questions.

Holy shit. A one word keyword? You're going to have to charge a lot for that. The new keyword tool is the same thing, so not too difficult to use. For the tracking, use Serpbook. And fuck whitehat SEO. For something on this scale, you just can't do that.

Any one word keyword is extremely competitive. How much do you think I should charge him per month?

Also, any current grey/black hat that currently works?
 
How do you people keep getting clients. You have no idea what you're doing but still land customers. Are you charging chump change?

One word keyword. No idea what to do. Don't ruin this guys business or waste his time. Find someone to pass the referral to and collect a referral fee. Then take some time to figure out a plan. Not the other way around. Don't screw with someones business.
 
What is the keyword? Is it some kind of a brand name? The companies name is easy to rank for since it has 0 competition, but a general topic keyword should be priced at around 1-3k per month, depending on monthly searches and competition.

No sense in looking at what it will cost - there is no knowledge or plan to actually do it.

That would be like me saying hey I have a girl that wants a boob job - how much can I charge??? (with no medical experience or knowledge of how to do it)

Then someone saying...."Oh boob jobs...charge her $8,000"

Awesome...now just have to learn how to perform plastic surgery.

Best option...find someone that will pay a referral fee. Do not waste the persons money or put their business at risk.

Look. I have been in the game for a few years and took a break from it. Just because my account says Oct 13, it doesn't mean I just started. Also, the reason why I am asking these types of questions is because I want to find out what has changed in terms of tools/prices/keyword research and these types of things.

It is a general name keyword and not brand name keyword. The thing is that it is for a small country where competition is not that big. He is already established in terms of content and web site presence. He just needs some sort of push in terms of on-site optimization (sitemap not properly working, robots not configured, no research keywords, website not structured properly in terms of speed) and offsite optimization (minor link building, decent social presence and so on).
 
Sadly there are lots of SEO providers that has no clue about what they are doing.
OP, Do what other SEO provider here:

You can pretty get away with it most of the time.
 
You should stay on your break until you figure it out. If you were in the game before you know better than anyone SEO is fluid, you also know that plenty of people on this board have no clue what they are talking about so why ask them for advice that will likely do you no good or worse, cause your client harm.

Its pretty scary to think that people put their livelihoods in the hands of people who are out of the loop or worse. Buy a domain and rank it. If you do that and it stays there you are probably good to go. Dont risk your reputation for a buck. Develop a good reputation by referring him to a good company then research how they rank him if they do a good job.
 
Thanks for solid advise testdrive and getwhatchuwant. I appreciate it. I started ranking one site of mine for the same keyword to see how it goes and whether I need to modify something in terms of my SEO plan.

Very good question, and do not take offense to your F'n question. :) The point of understanding the top performing keywords is very important for SEO. Youtube keywords(due to the volume) have a highly reliant position in Google search. I speak with Google reps on a weekly basis, and am here to help with the results of my meetings with Google. Just trying to help the community :).
