This keyword was hanging around page 4, so I lowered the density of some of the relevant keywords I was targeting. This is how their algorithm responded a few days later. Note te keywords are located at the top of the page in the first paragraph. I do these to test out their weightings..

Keyword is in H1 and title and URL.

Reduced repetition of target word by 3. Dropped to page 13+.

I'm thinking that it is their 'oh look they are doing SEO tricks' filter. My plan was to wait a while to see if it just goes either back to its original place higher or lower.

There's only three outcomes with each change you do: No change, ranks higher, ranks lower. You hear about there is no fixed rule for density but there must be otherwise how can it determine the context?

To be more specific I removed 3 words related to the term: car car car for example and replaced those with LSI related terms.
 
What was the original density, and what did you lower it to? And, how many links in total?
 
I'm fairly certain this was just happy coincidence and didn't have anything to do with dropping the keyword density. From my direct experiences, keyword density appears to have only limited significance to ranking unless we're talking about eliminating the keyword completely.
 
People put too much emphasis on keyword density.

It was likely one of the hundreds of algorithm tweaks Google makes each year that cause this drop.

Furthermore pretty much unless you are on page 1 or 2, the fluctuations can be pretty wild.

Just build more links and you'll be fine.
 
Google is really stupid to learn the context of articles. That's why I always keep a good percentage of KW density so stupid google knows what the page is about.
 
On this EXACT day a lot of sites saw movements, very likely not related to what OP was doing entirely.
 
I'd like to know what would happen if the keyword density was restored to it's original percentage. Only then can you be sure whether keyword density affects rankings that much or not. I however don't believe it does. Articles with 0% target keyword density are getting ranked.

Hes better off tweaking his on page so it bounces back to page 1-4, rather than blasting with links.Once you start link blasting you cant tell what optimal on page is.OP:# word(s) in keyword?prior density?current density?google seems to rape anything over 1.5%
 
Bounced back one place higher with an original bounce back two places higher.

Keyword density will do nothing to help his site, whether it's low or high. It's so worthless right now that it shouldn't even be listed as an on-page SEO method.
 
Funny I recently did the opposite: I removed H1 and mentions of the keywords from high up in the page and it jumped up to page 1 in less than a week. Google has serious on-page stress disorder right now, they're yelling at their own shadows if it looks like SEO.

Very interesting. I did a test 3 days ago where I reduced the mention of my main keyword (on my homepage) from 14 times down to 7 times.

Page dropped from #5 to #14. Today it's at #3.

But I still have the keyword mentioned about 3 times above the fold. I may reduce that down to just 1 mention and see if my page goes back to #1 where it use to rank.

lol what? Kw density does matter. Variances to please the algorithim and avoiding OOP are important.
