The Federal Trade Commission has hired the prosecutor who got Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh the death penalty to lead its investigation into potential anti-trust violations by Google, report David Streitfeld and Edward Wyatt of the New York Times.

Experts tell the Times her hiring sends "a strong signal that [the FTC is] prepared to take the Internet giant to court."According to Streitfeld and Wyatt, the government's concern with Google is that "Google has manipulated its search results, making it less likely that competing companies or products appear at the top of a results page.""The general issue underlying the investigation is whether Google abuses its power in the market for Internet search. Google controls about 66 percent of the United States search market, according to comScore. Microsoft's Bing accounts for about 15 percent of Internet searches, with Yahoo gathering 14 percent."

Destruction? That's exaggeration. Even if they lose, they can easily cover the losses in a few months or weeks.

In the 1990s, one platform dominated all of enterprise and consumer computing: Microsoft Windows.

Google does not have the same power Microsoft did in the 1990s.

Look at it this way. If they violated anti-trust laws, they will receive a financial penalty and be forced to correct whatever wrongdoing. That will cut their fiscal quarter "profits" down a bit. They earned
$2.89 Billion in profits in Q1 of 2012 already. Okay if they get slapped with anything over 100M I'd be extremely surprised. Google won't be too adversely affected by the lawsuit. Also remember this type of a lawsuit can easily be dragged out for YEARS in court. Don't expect a ruling within two years of the trial's initial start,

Actually, that's not true. You're comparing an OS to a search engine. As you stated in the first post, they control about 66% of the search market in the US, where as Bing is only 15%. Even if they lose, there's no way they'll fall that easily.

Google is fighting for its life to stop this process. There's a chance Google will win this fight. It has a lot of resources. But so far, thanks to Google+ and the astounding popularity of the iPhone, it's actually losing.

In the end . Google will destroy itself, and there will be somebody else there to pick up the pieces.

Its unlikely that any new competitor will come along and take over, They will make more and more mistakes,
    because of their arrogance,

This is what will topple them in the end

Though I for one, am not holding my breath that it will happen one day soon

    Google Over Optimization Penalty :

"We want people doing white hat search engine optimization (or even no search engine optimization at all) to be free to focus on creating amazing, compelling web sites. As always, we'll keep our ears open for feedback on ways to iterate and improve our ranking algorithms toward that goal."

Great minds  Lol...was going to say something VERY similar - the big G could and would only be taken down by "we, the people". Without users, they have nothing. See Bing/Yahoo up into that 60 plus percent and let G sit at 15 and see what they do then.

And what irks me, (IMHO) it is "we the people" who made them the giant they were pre-panda. I always tried to play their game, follow all their rules .... be clean, be honest, blah blah blah. Didn't do me any good.

Sorry for posting twice in a row, but this is another thing that is annoying - who the heck is Google to determine what is "amazing" and/or "compelling"? Shouldn't that be left up to visitors/users?? We're all different - what may be "amazing, compelling" to one may be borrriiinnngggg to the next person. But now they seem to think they are the one's to determine FOR EVERYONE what is deemed "amazing" and/or "compelling".

Really, they've stuck their heads way too far up their arses to even grasp reality these days.

This. I still laugh at the way they described Google +. They acted like they invented something amazing. People were like "It's been done. It's called Facebook."
