I'm the only one that gets that idea..
1/ open ist site in serps, check their source code, And compare keywords to yours.
2/ open top 5 sites and scrape relevant content, rearrange it so it is ORIGINAL content.
3/ Place the pages keywords in footer of page.
4/ when i was learning seo i went for the biggest competition page i could find and i got to first position
with 818 million competing pages in google i also ranken #1 on yahoo and bing.
5/ this was without 1 link and no connection to social media at that time, Content ( original) is king.

Why do you only assume that backlinking is the only aspect that matters when trying to rank on page one?
A few important things:
1) Quality of the copywriting
2) On Page factors like site speed, headers/subheaders etc etc
3) Site Architecure- Added pages to build up the topical relevancy?
4) Social signals activity -I'm guessing you don't have a lot of this going on if your rank does the Google dance each time you throw strong Links at your site.
5) Link Velocity, maybe you have strong Links but just not frequent or consistently built.
6) Anchor Text Ratios, have you checked if you have over optimized your anchor text ratios?
7) Co-citation: backlinks and mentions from reputable strong sites that are from the niche or industry you are in. A lot of people tend to overlook this when building links.
8) A whole bunch of other things that your competition has and you don't.

I dont rely on backlinks at all for mr ranking.
Of course site loading time is an important factor.
to rank position one for high competition keys is the easiest thing, If you just do what keeps google happy
