Google webmasters tools

Hi all,

I have signed up to Google webmaster tools.

According to webmaster tools I have an avg position of 125 keywords in the top 10 for my website. When I highlight the keyword and search Google, sometimes I am in the position it tells me, other times not. That's fine, as obviously the keywords will fluctuate I assume.

Some of these keywords have barely no searches, 25/30 and so on, others that I'm ranked for are in the hundreds. These keywords must be ranking from phrases in articles I have written, as I haven't specifically written articles about theses keywords.

I'm wondering should I now write articles on all these keywords, say 200 searches above a month? This could end up being a lot of work, or should I just try and continue what I'm doing, which is finding keywords, that have a 800 searches plus, and writing articles that specifically target that keyword. I'm thinking the latter, as I imagine that these are bringing in more visitors, but I'm also thinking, that articles on the low search keywords I'm already ranking for, would cement my position.

I have been thinking about this all morning, so any Advice would be appreciated.

It all depends on how much it's worth to rank for the 200 searches keywords and how much you will earn by ranking on them.
Maybe build a couple of backlinks with the anchor text matching those keywords pointing to the article which is ranking for them..

200 is too low. You should aim for minimum 1k searches. Are they global or monthly? See also trend of searches from Google insights.

Thanks for the suggestions, I think you are both right. It's too much work to stick to my normal procedure of writing 1000+ word articles, for keywords with barely 200 local month searches.

Targeting these keywords with high PR backlinks, sounds like a far better plan. Thanks for the help.

Write less articles with more longtail keywords in them...

Webmaster tools shows you your rank for your site in any Google searches. This means it could be Google image search/news/etc. I often find myself randomly ranking very high for keywords then realizing its only Google image search (which isn't all that bad!). Targeting articles that have 200-800 exact searches isn't such a bad idea because they're much easier and you can rank for a lot more.

1k searches is the "benchmark" most use. But you also have to factor how many derivatons are ther eon that kw? If you rank for one fderivation how easy will the other be? Is it a buyer kw?, etc

Thanks for that, I didn't realize that. Honestly this is my first adsense site, and I'm having a hell of a time with it. Everything is new, and I'm clearly doing a lot wrong.

I just checked adsense performance reports. I have 771 page views and 1 click of 17p over 5 days. Now I'm not sure if adsense counts spiders and such against page views, but whatever way I look at it, disaster! Must be the worst ad click to visitor ratio ever, lol.

I'm using wassup for tracking, and most of my visitors are coming from page 1, UK, canada andUS google, as well as ask, yahoo etc. I'm starting to rank for keywords with 14,000 exact local monthly, the visits are coming but the ad-clicks are nowhere to be seen. It's all original content written by me, and the site isn't ugly (i think)

However, I'll just keep cracking on and do some testing, thanks for all the replies.
