When do they update the links back to your site? Like how often? Is it just random? Monthly? Sorry this is a pretty noobish question.

Depends on when the link is crawled by google. you can try pinging that specific page to encourage a crawl.

keep in mind that in google's eyes not every incoming link counts as a backlink.

ya, just try looking for backlinks on google, msn, and yahoo. you'll get different numbers for each

Webmaster tools update quite frequently. Not sure how frequently but I can see new backlinks today that were not there 2 days ago. It tells you the date the link was found so you can try and make an estimate that way as well.

agreed @ mighty. webmaster tools is probably the best you're going to get for google.
