correct. to do anything online an id will be required.
I did not try but I just read on google voice forum starting january 31 2026 id is required.

If you’re worried about privacy anything google related should be the last thing you’d be using, KYC or no KYC.

Yeah, a lot of people started seeing this recently. Google has been tightening verification across a lot of their services, especially anything related to phone numbers.Voice numbers get abused pretty heavily for signups and automation, so they’re adding extra identity checks in some regions. Not everyone gets the ID request yet, but it seems to be rolling out more often.Most likely it’s just part of Google pushing stronger verification across their products

It's their platform and they can do whatever they want.
The reality is people have probably abused the living hell out of it, like with gmails and it's just a compliance checkbook.
Google dgaf about your I'd they know reasonably well who amd what you are, this is anti fraud and compliance double whammy.
If you don't like it, create you're own service, see how that goes
