now to sign up for a google voice account you need to verify your identity by uploading your id.

wtf?

please no "it's their platform they can do whatever they want" comments. that's not the point.

don't know about Google voice but one thing I know is soon more companies will follow this practice. It's so over for your privacy

Yeah, it seems Google is tightening verification to reduce spam and abuse on the platform. Many services are adding stronger identity checks lately. It might be inconvenient, but it’s likely part of broader security and compliance changes.

Looks like Google is tightening verification across many services lately. Not surprising with all the spam and automated accounts.

yes many people noticed this recently. google is pushing more id checks to stop spam accounts.

happens more if you create many numbers or use vpn.

Yeah, a lot of people started seeing this recently. Google has been tightening verification across a lot of their services, especially anything related to phone numbers.Voice numbers get abused pretty heavily for signups and automation, so they’re adding extra identity checks in some regions. Not everyone gets the ID request yet, but it seems to be rolling out more often. Most likely it’s just part of Google pushing stronger verification across their products

Hey

It's their platform and they can do whatever they want.

The reality is people have probably abused the living hell out of it, like with gmails and it's just a compliance checkbook.

Google dgaf about your I'd they know reasonably well who amd what you are, this is anti fraud and compliance double whammy.

If you don't like it, create you're own service, see how that goes

Tightening verification on Google Voice is just the beginning, as I've seen similar ID checks rolling out on other services like Google My Business and AdWords. To bypass these checks, I've been using burner numbers from specific carriers that don't trigger extra verification steps, with a success rate of around 80%. However, this method requires constant testing and adaptation, as Google's algorithms are always evolving to catch up with workarounds. One pattern I've noticed is that using a VPN from a specific region can increase the likelihood of getting flagged for ID verification, so it's crucial to rotate IPs and use diverse location spoofing.
