Our betting website has maintained a top-ranking position for two consecutive years. Today, we've observed a significant drop in search engine rankings, now ranking around position 20. This decline is also evident in two of our main competitors. Could this be attributed to a recent algorithm update? Should we implement immediate countermeasures or monitor the situation further?

Yes it is due to Google algorithm which penalizes and sandbox's sites, does not means there is some update going on.
Their system of penalizing sites is always active after they introduced it.
Wait at least 7 days, it might rebound, if not then there can be two scanerio's
You loose indexing > means there is something wrong with content, it will be difficult to recover (if not new site, new sites can loose indexing just for being a new site)
You loose rankings > means you require some update with content, on-site SEO, better site structure, better user engagement, more quality and relevant backlinks

There's something going on, They are actually just about to release an update.

You can check the algorithm tools such as semrush.com/sensor which is at a 9.3 today.

Haha I love this.

How very Star Trek!

If anyone ever finds immediate countermeasures for Google updates they're going to be very wealthy. :-)

Sadly all we can do is monitor the chaos.

You can fix later, but the problem is during the update no one has any clue what's going on. No one knows what the update is about. It's only after it you can analyse and figure out, and then generally you're going to struggle to come back until the next update usually.

Possibly due to an update , Watch the situations, review the changes and adjust SEO strategy

There are always fluctuations in the SERPs before they actually announce something.

I call it Update Foreplay.

This could be it.

Also, in the recent interview they mentioned that major update probably won't be coming for a while. Free translation: brace yourself for impact immediately
