Bing is in the best position, if it cleans its front page up some more and puts more focus on search results it will have a good chance to start getting market share.

The idea some people have on the first page suggesting "let google do what they want" ehh, essentially google is built off our backs. They use our content, without our content google wouldn't be what it is today. The way they use our content is pretty harsh, "Hey I'ma use this, if you don't want me to. Tell me not to, but I'm not asking your permission beforehand." So they should be catering to the small people who supply the content that allow them to be who they are today.

But I guess it's much like life, we pay taxes and let the government do whatever the fuck they want :), eventually...
 
Google does all kinds of shady stuff but with clearly corrupt law enforcement in almost every Western country nothing ever happens. Read earlier that 99% of videos indexed in Google is YouTube videos which could be used to put forth an accusation of anti-competition. Having the first 3 - 5 results on any result page be strictly ads could also be used in courts I'd assume. A good lawyer can make a case for anything if he puts in the time and research. But, I'm sure everyone in the BHW lounge know better than actual lawyers, right? Lol

At the end of the day, the Government has the final say in how a business is allowed to conduct business. Roosevelt broke up Standard Oil, the exact same thing can happen to Alphabet if they get after it. Standard Oil would be worth around $1trillion today, Alphabet is coming up on $600bn. I just searched for a few porn kw's on DDG and they returned millions of porn. I did it for science I swear.
 
No one at G is going to jail for their search results. The worst they ever get is a fine. What's a billion or two when they clear billions a year? Peanuts.

Also, you think their lawyers don't know the laws? Legalities and technicalities are what these people do for a living. They are not going down unless they implode.

I'm for non-interference in how businesses are run. I have said before that Google should be able to make any choices about what to show in search results.

The issue is that it holds a monopoly position in most countries. The barriers to entry to running a search engine are now too high for any other competitor to take market share. The infrastructure Google has is expensive, and has been built as a result of being first to market (with a search engine that returns results users want to see). Yahoo, Alta Vista, Lycos and HotBot weren't able to do that. Their results were not good. DDG and Bing might be as good technically, but Google have market share (thanks partly to offering Chrome and Android for free).

The monopoly will continue to exist until a new model for search is created, and provided Google don't get there first by being able to spend endless resources developing it.

Currently afaik the EU and especially here in Germany ministry of justice are trying to establish laws to force social networks and other digital services to remove hate speech and stuff like that.
 
Google is definitely in a position for an antitrust lawsuit.

Problem is, the highest government officials had mistresses in Gmail....do you think corrupt politicians have the guts to sue Google when all those kinky emails can suddenly leak to the press?
 
The barriers are not too high, there is very low barrier to entering the search engine market. You just need to start at something small and niche and go from there. There are alot of simple and common sense features that google lacks and has lacked for a long time that can be used.
 
Censorship is good, i am with Google on this as it will make Google more secure for kids and families. They are doing this for us.

I stopped using it one month ago.
 
I would guess users would want to type in their search query and have the most relevant results from the Internet returned. There aren't many other features that would be in demand.

To judge what is relevant, to crawl and index the Internet and to deliver search results quickly requires huge computing power. You'd need hundreds of millions to set up the data centres, and that is before you develop the technology.

And you need to market it as well. Walk onto the street and ask someone whether they know what DuckDuckGo is (which is well marketed) and most people won't. So you might need to develop a browser, or an operating system to get people to use the search engine automatically.

I agree 110% here, especially given how they are in position with their search engine to unfairly promote their other products. The search engine part of Google needs to be separated. Look at what they did after they bought Thumbtack: http://searchengineland.com/google-...n-less-than-a-week-after-it-was-issued-223144 Would ANY other site see this happen? Did Overstock.com get forgiven and returned to the SERPS this fast?

Internet explorer was broken off from Windows for much less.

The combination of Chrome, their trackers, their search, their ads and everything else does configure unfair competition all around.

We haven't had a real Google competitor since they destroyed Altavista in 1999....
 
I've been in SEO for a while.. we see these things happen and keep up on them. There was a SOPA-like law that was recently passed in November of 2016, Google updated the algorithm to censor data to the public on December of 2016. And late in December a Google employee noticed that the all-inclusive control they gave the AI, has recently been sending encrypted messages between off-shore servers and no one know what they are saying to each other..

Just saying, this 'ish happened, and something WORSE took it's place before 2017 even hit.
