Google is to begin targeting sites it deems as "inaccurate, offensive, hateful, or upsetting" apparently...

Do we really want Google deciding what is "upsetting" and pulling it from view? What if Google decides to inject it's own adjenda into these judgements? If one politician supports Google, how are we to know they won't bend these rules to censor opposition? Isn't this the EXACT sort of thing Google accused China of doing years ago? This could be the first big step toward mass internet censorship folks... we've already seen Natural News get blacklisted off Google. Many more to come soon, I'm sure.

You people seriously need to stop with all this rigmarole about Google sensoring websites. They can do whatever the fuck they want. They're a business, not just a search engine, and they aren't legally obligated to list any website in their results.

Also, in case you didn't know this: they are well within their legal and moral rights to do this. Don't pretend like other companies don't do this too. G is just getting more heat for it bc for some stupid reason, people think G is synonymous with free speech. It isn't. It's synonymous with "I do what I want."

Tl;dr: G can do what it wants and no one can stop them. Just like you run your business the way you want, and choose who you want to work with and what services you are going to provide, they have the right to do the same. So either stop relying on them or use a different search engine.

It really is as simple as that.
 
At the moment google is the portal to free and open information (the internet) but there is a clear direction here and that is the refining of information.

Eventually it will be very ridged information that you can get from google and so it will be more like an encyclopaedia at which point surely there will be another search engine where you go for free and unadulterated information (like Wikipedia).

That's my prediction.

Timescale maybe 5-10 years.

Google has been doing this for quite some time. Why didn't you complain when Google demoted mugshot websites? Why didn't you complain when Google began demoting torrent sites. How about improvised explosive and terrorism websites?

Monopolies like google have specific laws to stop them doing things like this.
In the end it will probably be the EU who clamp down on them. Bur breaking the law doesnr seem to bother google to much. By the tims the courts actand the fines are due. Google is always way ahead in the profit game.
 
It's their search engine..

Of course it's not ideal for some people.

But they don't really care, and can do whatever they want :)

Please, enlighten us. What specific laws are being broken by Google? Bc in the US, what they're doing isn't illegal, but I'm not familiar with EU law.

I see that you are unaware of US law, and California law. Being kind, you are mistaken in your belief of a law preventing them from censorship.
