GOOGLE THINK CONTENT - penalty... what's the reason?

So I had a niche site that was making around $100 a month after 6 months of SEO, this was my first site. And at the end of November, beginning of December, Google sent me this thin content penalty. The annoying part is that there was another site ranking just below mine that had WORSE content, by far. And that one is completely unaffected. Let me give you guys details on the SEO so the pros can diagnose this, what caused it?

    - I used some paid services. I bought some article links in the beginning, but I don't think that was it because it ranked well for months after. And it had tons of positive reviews on BHW.
    - Much later I bought some more services at the advice of a close friend whos been doing very well for a long time, those were social signals and blog comments, and those were bought much closer to the time of penalty.
    - I had once accidentally crosslinked some of my PBNs, and that lasted for a week or so before I realized and fixed it. But do you think crosslinking like that would allow network to be discovered and penalized?
    - My PBNs were all largely of the similar format, 3-8 articles, each article 300-700 words (usually 500). Pictures here and there, each PBN site linking to authority domains a few times, and on the homepage linking to money site. All the content was manually written, but do you think it could have been the format that was too generic? I did have other tier 1 links along with PBN to balance out link diversity, I had articles, and the previously said bought links.
    - I checked to see and some of my PBNs had been deindexed after the penalty. Could this hint that it was indeed related to the linking scheme?
    - My content is the best in the niche, and some competitors who have much worse content are still ranking. While I got penalised.

What causes the thin content penalty and can it be recovered?

    Experts thanks for your help.

Thin content penalty usually goes for "no additional value" added to your article compared to other "reviews" or so.
I find it though that the word count somehow matters but I know that the thing Google mentioned when I searched for this penalty was the value I have added for my visitors/users compared to other articles.

This isn't about your PBN, you have not been penalized because of that.
You might got penalized because you got reported or so as I got too in the past ... :\

How large was the network? Was competition huge in your niche? Did you check whether your PBNs were indexed or not prior to buying? Or only after the penalty? How many articles were published on your money site? It can be recovered after removing the crooked parts that caused the penalty and submitting a reconsideration request.

While the penalty was 'Think Content' many get this message for link building too. So i believe you were penalised because your PBN got found or reported (hence the deindexed domains) and you were penalised for your PBN links. Nothing to do with your actual website content (hence the other guy with worse content is still ranking).

If you use facebook share or social signal, it is not in the Google index, so it is not harmful to rank,,,

Nmaun if you use backlinks blog comments, it is dangerous if they are the same keywords and the content is not unique ...

    I can argue with that.

I had a website, 0 links built, 500+ words on each post (no value added but talking on the subject), I have been #1-5 for 2 years and out of nowhere got "thin content" penalty (manual action) while my competitor only had ~100 words on each post (copied from my articles, random parts of it) and also copied my images/afiliate buttons and basically everything. He was #1-5 after my penalization. I still got no clue what happened.... the only thing I can say is that my website got reported by him many times.

Google can penalize your websites for any reason they want. They can always find an absurd reason.

Try to keep your content unique and have few pages on your website like 5 to 8 pages will be good.

Its funny because I never buy content only copy paste + source and never penalised.

To the first poster , you got penilised for bad links nothink else.

unless your content was a copy of other ppl work.

If your content is rich written and bang on with your niche
and just over 500 words and written from a well known
    source there be no problem

i personally think it a spammy link or links that took you down....
