Cyrus Shepard wrote an open letter to the Google Search team, highlighting that despite all efforts, search algorithms still struggle with accurate ranking -
For example, searches like "best crypto exchange," "best CBD gummies," and other commercial queries often return results from sites like Forbes, which rank first across many topics but don't always reflect true expert content.

He suggests that search results should include a wider variety of sites with focused expertise, apply the "Helpful Content" standards equally for both large and small sites, and reduce the influence of "brand" on ranking, especially for big sites, to avoid penalizing well-researched but lesser-known web resources.

Determining expertise would be a manual exercise. Google just wants to deploy flawed algorithms that kills websites with actually helpful content.

I share the sentiment of the majority: google does not care squat about expertise. They have an army of engineers, mathematicians, psychologists and linguists to create stuff that's magical if they wanted to, but that's not their goal. That guy is so naive

google seems to be making the rich richer. recently, I've noticed that it's also applying political filters in search results

& how exactly would you determine someone's/site's expertise?
Frankly, google doesn't care, as long as it brings in money, it's a job well done
