Hi,
I have encountered this several times lately.
I add an expired domain with a link profile to GSC. After weeks it shows none or just a couple of backlinks even though the domain has over 200/300 referring domains.
Why does it happen? I always find GSC to show all indexed backlinks/referring domains.

GSC does not show all the links.

Just check in Google whether those links are indexed or not.

That's the thing..
1. Multiple contextual backlinks are in Google's index
2. 3 weeks after adding to GSC it says "no data"
 
I've started a few money sites with expired domains this year, they don't perform any better than a brand new domain... it's like the old backlinks get devalued/not counted. But that may have just been me.

That's why I created this thread. My thinking was: the domain has many backlinks which are in Google's index. If GSC does not show them 3 weeks after veryfing the domain it means the domain is considered as a fresh new domain? But of course I could be wrong... Anyone wise mind explaining?

Most likely something like that.

Did you re-create the same site/content etc as it was before it expired?
 
submit these links to indexing service, if they're good enough, google should count them, some kind of refresh

Similar question has been asked over and over on the forum. The answers remain the same.

Try to search around the forum next time before posting questions.
 
GSC is pretty unreliable. And you have to be very careful to actually utilize the backlinks from pages, that are no longer live.

If you just randomly redirect 404 inner pages to homepage, then there's very slim chance those links will show in GSC.

Your options are to either recreate the content of these pages, OR, create new, very very similar content and redirect individual pages there.

Also, depending on the niche itself and how spammy it is, it's still the best idea to retain the very close relevancy of the domain. It's an absolute must with money sites.

Unless you utilize everything perfectly, then there's definitely a power loss. Saying it acts like a new domain is pretty farfetched, but the power loss will be visible.

For some domains recreated all content and urls from archive, for others set up completely new website

There is no point in reindexing backlinks as they are already in Google's index.

So we are talking here about external backlinks pointing to the expired domains. All previous internal URLs and website structure was retrieved. Google pretty quickly reindexed the whole website with the old URLs. If after several weeks in GSC I see no external backlinks pointing to this domain - can we make any assumptions on why this is happening?

Oh, that's easy.

Because Google is retarded.

Do not expect everything to ever show in the GSC. Most of the time it won't even be half of it. Especially nowadays, when Google is fucked up beyond recognition.

Rather, watch how the domain performs in the long run.
 
In May update Google destroyed pbns and money sites built on expired domains..

Obviously they can't catch all of them, and sites built on expired domains 2-3 years ago did good, but the glory days are gone.

I have many sites built on expired domains and search console old links disappeared (the new ones I built are still there)

1.Why do you think those backlinks really exist? Ahrefs, Semrush, Majestic links contain them?
Then you must understand the concept of how those tools are working. Those are literally the best tools but they don't show live experience. It's impossible to update databases such often for them.

2. Search Console contains not all backlinks.

Ahrefs but I checked them manually to ensure backlinks are live and are in Google's index using the "site" command.
These are really good backlinks coming from domains such us forbes, nytimes etc.
I am only surprised getting "no data" in GSC for this domain even a month after adding it whereas for others I get many backlinks displayed after a couple of days.

That's normal really.

As with everything in SEO... you are throwing shit against the wall and hoping something sticks. Looking for a logical explanation in a system (as this past year has proven) which works on randomness to a large extent, is simply impossible.
