I don't think ordinary people are too concerned about their privacy. This is unfortunate, but the outcry following the NSA snooping revelations were quite limited.

Governments have a desire to collect information on their citizens. As with most political structures, those in charge have an appetite to gain more power and control over the citizenry. By using Google and other private sector businesses, governments are able to use them as a proxy in their quest to collect even more data. Should Google Glasses take off, as an example, Google and the government will be able to expand its data collection well beyond digital to digital communications.

I've long said Google was positioning itself to enter the defense industry. Data mining is their expertise, and I would not be surprised at all if taxpayer dollars were already flowing to Google to expand their data collection and sharing capabilities. If this is not happening now, you can bet it will happen in the very near future.

Peoples perception of Google are changing
Their motto of do no harm, is starting to be tarnished

Governments are starting to look at google as the monopoly it is
Their main power lies in their control over American politicians

But their biggest problem is their sharholders
Your only as good as your last financial report
Google shareholders have become used to share prices and dividends rising year on year

To keep doing this, they need to become more aggressive with each year
Which is what they are now doing.

People will become ad blind in the end and will skip them

The proof that this is already happening is the fact that google feel it necessary to take
control of everything above the fold. In fact I've heard rumors that the 3rd place ads are out performing
the top 2

In the end this will be their biggest problem.

And when/if they do that, that's probably the point people will really start noticing. I can see Bing or some new player exploiting that heavily in future ad campaigns, if it ever happens.

I agree with all that you are saying but perceptions and sentiments can change quickly and really how much are you really losing if you use a different Search Engine? Hell , I saw the very same transition happen seemingly overnight with the move to Google.
 
Google results have been crap for a while now, it's only a matter of time before they become the very tool of their own demise.

True.
But google can always put the blame on all the blackhat guys and spammers for poor results even though it is their algorithm which sucks. But what really pisses me off is their double standards.

Google gives direction to all webmasters to have original content while google steal images and content from other sites and displays as their own. And still worst is their self promotion.

All of you guys know how google pushes their own properties like youtube in serps. I am in Bangkok and I was looking for a flight. I googled "flight search" in google.co.th. The first result on the page is www.google.com/flights/
I clicked through and started searching for flights only to realize that google doesn't support flights from Bangkok. WTF??

Someone should file a lawsuit against google for intentionally manipulating search results for google's own benefits.

I had great respect for Amit Singhal. But this really sucks man.
