The niche I was investigating was "rc airplanes" (it's saturated as fuck, don't bother).

So I started typing it into google:

810,000 pages. Wow, that's a lot. Well, let's search, anyway:

7.5 million?! Holy shit.

Why does google's dropdown say 810,000 when there are actually 7.5 million results?

(It's 7.2 million if you put it in quotes)

Google Suggest results are filtered. Change the web search setting under safe search to use strict filtering and results will be close to Google Suggest. I think other filters make a smaller difference

filtered for non-adult results or something?

So we need to go off of the actual results page, not the suggested number, right?

Yes the actual SERPs will show all results if you do not turn filters on under preferences

Funny. I search rc airplanes and get 257,000 results through the icefrog us proxy, yet if i search it in speech marks it's 6.7mil. 110k searches monthly according to google. The long tail keywords arent so bad though, like rc airplane kits, or rc airplanes for sale.

And yes go off the actual results.

what are icefrog and speech?

icefrog.info is a usa proxy site. Because i live in new zealand I have to surf google through a usa proxy so that i can see how many ads people are putting up for that keyword. speech = speech marks = ""

I looked at search results using iceforg and think the search parameters are not being passed properly - filters are turned on but not showing in the url search paramaters. The url shows safe search is turned off but it is not - turn it off using preferences and results go up. There must be other filters turned on

You do not have to use a proxy to see U.S. search results and ads. Do the search at Google.com instead of another country version and when results come up search again with &gl=us added to the url to see what U.S. users see

Ok of i was using google.com/webhp to get to the usa google, but the ads were still tailored to my nz IP. Thanks for the and geographic location equals United states :)

so otherwise you guys get a different version of google?

Yes - Google tailors the results to the location by default so the ranks and ads are different but I think the total number of results stays the same

Google tailors shows number of searched MADE. Google engine shows possible sites with content. That is why people.

Isnt it the results for the keywords in quotes "" ?

The easiest way to quickly get to Google.com in English for the US is to go to Google.com/ncr It will store a cookie to set your temporary default to US Google in English.

I used this all the time while in Chinese, Thai, and Arabic internet cafes while traveling, in which I couldn't even read something like "Ingles".
