Google Results an Absolute Joke

I def agree with OP regarding a certain loss of relevancy and quality on G. But for now, to be really honest, a part from us working in the area, "seo insiders" and the likes, ppl won't be able to tell their ass from their mouth on the net and won't probably notice some subtle differences like these. They'll probably keep doing what they got used to: after all for most "normal ppl" google and the url bar ARE SADLY really the same thing.. And no, there hasn't been any trend that substantiates the theory of a mass migration from G to what is -arguably- a better alternative... Yet? We'll see: habits are hard to die until some major issue arises and we're not there. ;)

The migration theory I've been advancing is one more geared towards marketers, to get them off of relying solely on Google or other general search engines for getting quality targeted ttraffic. The magic key is, start optimizing the internal search engines of major sites (youtube, yahoo answers, amazon, etc) that get megatons of direct traffic. The regular public isn't gravitating away from Google as the main general search engine, but they DO often go directly to a major site directly, and start their searches or browsing from there.

Make your uploads to YT easy to find, or get your url put in the description/comments etc of related videos that have already gone viral. Put more of your urls on YA, as that is often the first place visitors go to get a question answered, and not Google. Do enough of this, and it won't matter if G puts YT or YA authority type urls on the first page of the search results, because most of those results will be pages promoting your url anyway. Beat them at their own silly game, and get back to page one anyway.
 
Did You Try To Bing it?

I read/heard someone that G estimated 60% of all search terms are either completely new or not used in last 6 months.

anyways - I agree that the results (influenced by spilled organic freshly squeezed juice on servers and the urge to suck everyone into adwords) have been less than desirable ever since the Panda, at least but until we get a mind reading Go{d}ogle we won't see 100% of the time the results we want or excpect.

haha ya, I noticed that too and thought it was hilarious. There's a bunch of search terms like that for high competition niches. Some of the SERPs are a joke.

Agree 100%. This is a solid method. Back when I first started I focused solely on google traffic. It worked alright for those days. Got to the first page of my desired serp. Overtime, all the updates moved me lower. These days google has everything messed up, even for legitimate sites that are offering HIGH QUALITY content to google's users. If google doesn't send us traffic, how are we even suppose to pay for creating high quality content? Fuck google.

These days I am completely diversified to using facebook, youtube, yahoo answers, forums (not on BHW, of course) etc.

plus going the indirect method is much better for my business. People are more likely to convert if they first land on a YA page, read my fake review of my site and then click the link to my site.

In these parts, Google can never do anything right. If all their results show perfect relevant results (if there is such a thing) people here will be pissed that blackhat methods don't work and only the large domains can rank high. If the results are less than perfect, then we have this thread ...

Actually no.

I'm not an SEO. I never liked SEO and I like it even less now.

This thread is from the perspective of a user, which is why it's shocking. The problem is the results aren't "less than perfect", they're absolute junk. Did you fully read over the results for viagra and great css guide?

And actually the vast majority of people on bhw prefer making money doing things that are helpful and that they enjoy. The problem has been in the past with SEO you could have created the best content in the world and been blown out the water by some spammers with dup content.

Panda in 2011 gave SEO's the opportunity to start creating something of value. A lot of people moved towards authority sites and many others just started writing good content that would help users. People seemed to be enjoying it and feeling good about their work.

Along comes Penguin and starts blowing all these high quality, great user experience sites out the water.. Recently things started getting even worse since not only are the high quality sites disappearing, but a bunch of utterly crap sites are ranking. Like literally 1-3 pages of junk content.

This is why a lot of SEOs are so pissed. They feel betrayed. What I see isn't the typical "damn, another update" type rants. People are genuinely annoyed that they were providing great content that Google supposedly wanted and their sites are being beaten by trash.


For me as a user of Google, I'm just really starting to notice how bad the results are. One thing I'll note that's unfortunate is you almost become accustomed to bad results. You forget what good results are. If it happens to me, then it certainly happens to the average Google user. The only reason I started to question the results is because I'm exposed to the discussions on bhw, so I started to compare some results from Google/bing/blekko and realized "Oh wait a minute, THIS is what results were suppose to be like!" -- I awoke from the Matrix :-)
 
Bing is growing in terms of relevancy and quality for sure..

This thread ranking on 1st page 5th position in Bing now! thats the signal of quality and unique content with freshness.

If google wants this kind of user experience then we are going to tell other people that use BING rather than google which gives junk results!

If SEOs have power to make Google a giant search engines then they can dump google and make BING a search giant for sure.. (atleast i believe in this)

I hope you find that CSS guide real soon. And I hope it has a section on usability. Preferably one that points out why changing the font colour to some shade of red on a black background is a really bad idea, making it difficult for some of us on Matte screen laptops to read what you wrote.

Yes google is hard for SEO now but it's still good for searchers.
And to the op: looks like you want Google to guess what you need. Form better search terms instead.

Thanks for the lengthy response. It is true that the quality of Google's results may be slipping and I won't argue with that. Just pointing out that this forum as a whole will always have people who are not satisfied with what Google is doing.

Hahahaha! Sorry.. I made this post just before I was going off to bed and copy 'n' pasting the serps caused a lot of the text to go black! I was too tired to individually fix it so I decided to just pick a random red and go to bed. It is an awful contrast though. I'll fix that now :)
