Google are removing the right sidebar ads in search results.

This puts more emphasis on GPLs and the paid ads at the top of the search.

Does it mean the price of clicks is going to rise as there will be less impressions and more competition for the remaining placements?

    I'd say that's a pretty fair assumption.

They also just increased the generic number of ads at the top of the page from 3 to 4 for the majority of search queries.

Cant see this being good for traffic to the organic results....

I think in 2 years 1st page of Google will consist only ads, at least for top search terms (poor people will fight with longtail keywords)... it's all about the money!!

I doubt that, google would not want to lose its marketshare. That would be shooting them self in the foot. But, you never know. You could be right, greed is powerful. google likes money

More likely is that organic listings are pushed under the fold - where they mostly already are.

Yeah Ads on right side are not showing up in Google search. So I google searched and found this article about this update: https://searchenginewatch.com/2016/...g-all-right-hand-side-ads-on-serps-worldwide/

Don't what they are really try to do, but according to SEW - "The "complete and permanent" roll-out will be finalized on 22 February." I wish they are not going to implement this forever, because that's gonna hurt really bad ;).

The right sidebar was obsolete anyway, maybe a few clicks for the first 2-3 results. But the CTR was below 1% , in most cases 0.2-0.5 % which is way to low. I think this is a good idea.

I think this is a real game changer. Google will charge more now for first page so SEO is much more important than before.

Google will lose its majority market share eventually anyway. Impossible for a company to stay on top forever. People don't like ads, nobody does. And when they see Google increasingly pushing more ads onto them, they'll get turned off and go some where else.

I have done adwords for a living and still manage several accounts. The ctr of an in the top 3 spots can easily be over 10% for the best performing ad groups. This means the top 3 ads alone can take away as much as 20-30% clicks. Clearly the consumers are fine with clicking the ads. Now with 4 ads at the top i fully expect the top ads to take away over 30-35% of all traffic for money keywords. The way adwords quality score is designed, the advertisers are compelled to improve their ad's CTR to get more clicks for less cpc. This means that over time, the proportion of clicks on paid listings will increase for any given SERP.

    The problem with google is
    a) search volume on Google has peaked or is peaking - growth has certainly slowed down and that is bad news for the share price
    b) mobile screens cant show 10 ads like desktops and therefore a lower proportion of searches result in paid ad clicks.

This update is an attempt to resolve these two issues. I am waiting for facebook to launch it's search advertising program. That will put a lot of pressure on adwords because right now they are head and shoulders above Bing.

I wonder if html5 got anythink to do with this new update i thinking maybe there going to be a huge change to the mobile browser appearance in general .

If mobile devices dont see the top adverts then there less money made via google and others and since everythink nearly handheld mobile device browsers i am sure html5 will resue this. Only my opinion, sonethink defiantly changing google never does anythink unless it benefits it self.

    internet marketers,
that means all those with side adverts , top in google ranks , should be getting more hits
as there websites will still look like old Google template, and there cpc should be heigher ... (( lucky sods lol
