This post is about white hat SEO obviously but it's still good to keep in mind whatever your strategy is for affiliate and review posts.
To stand out after the recent Google updates targeting affiliates and review posts, focus on adding value and including unique content to your review/affiliate posts.
Here are some tips directly from Google, I'll add the links at the end.
I highly recommend anyone with an affiliate site or who posts reviews take a moment to read it, because Google is telling you how you can have a better chance at ranking and how you can find yourself penalized.
Review post tips:
- Show you are an expert on the product by using it and testing it from a user perspective
- Show proof of your experience with the product in the form of media (images, screenshots, links, video is a good one imo) This shows your review is authentic
- Use quantitative data to demonstrate how the product stacks up or compares to similar products and explain why it is better (or worse.) ie Do your own testing and experiments.
- compare it to similar products and explain what is special about it
- Go through the pros and cons based on your own experience
- make product recommendations ie say who the product is good for and why or suggest alternatives for certain types of people
- Compare it to previous models or versions of the product and discuss differences and improvements
- Rate key decision making factors for the catagory of product so buyers know how it rates in each department
- Discuss the product design beyond what is written on the manufacturer website and how it affects the user
- Link to other relevant key resources
- If you're saying a product is the best explain why and use supporting facts to back up your claim
- When doing a roundup post ensure you have added enough unique value for the post to stand out on its own if you also write individual reviews of the products listed.
Affiliate site tips:
- Don't just post what information you can find on the manufacturers website or on other websites already published. This means you should have some experience with the product you're reccomending.
- Add unique value and helpful content
- Don't copy other websites
- Only a small percentage of content on the site should be affiliate content. The rest should be useful and unique content to help your reader.
- Ensure you choose affiliate products that are relevant to your website
- Consider why someone would want to come to your site instead of just going to the manufacturer website directly.
- Keep content fresh and updated
- Focus on building a community with your website
