Any help as too what I could do to improve? the #3 SERP doesn't have any anchor text for my keyword. their domain is way younger in comparison and the amount of backlinks is minimal...?

Yes, you are right just need more backlink and some good quality content I guess.

Without all the information, it is difficult to say. For example, is the keyword in the domain name? What is your TLD vs. theirs? Does the link profile look the same on Google (MS uses the Yahoo link data)?

Try Xrumer blasting them with the default Xrumer list as this may work. Don't spin the content just anchor text them for your keyword.
