I dont think that removal of the http version of website from G. Webmaster will have any effect on ranking/indexing. Google will go in its own pace, regardless of your actions on Websmaster.

Does excessive use of 301 re-direction also hampers a website traffic, I am talking in respect of giant e-commerce websites which are having lacs of pages!

i thought so too and changed a page ..... did have a slightly negative effect as well. so i don't recommend to change to https ...

Same thing. I have changed about 3 of websites to https, and 2 of them are still ranking on their initial position, while of then has gone under.
Between, is there anyway to redirects https to http automatically? And not like this: https://wrong.host.badssl.com/

Don't Worry, it's natural.
Just 301 Redirect all of your HTTP links to HTTPS and Sit Back, Google Will Fix it ASAP.
